Startford City Indiana January 15 Many tin plate workers from the Montpelier factory abandoned by the American Tin Phone company are returning to Wales. A plan to build an independent Hartford City factory failed and now most workers will seek Wales as their destination.
In Frankton Indiana January 15 The eight and ten ton flour mills at Republic iron works have closed and many men are idle. The puddling department may cease operations next. No reason is given for the sudden shutdown though several thousand dollars of new machinery had just been installed. Over 300 men will be out of employment.
The Indianapolis Art association board agrees to purchase Talbott's place, a two acre tract bounded by Sixteenth Seventeenth and Pennsylvania streets and Talbott avenue, for about $50,000 to house a new art museum.
The body of E. Briggs of South Bend was found four miles west of Fort Wayne in a bushes clump with a bullet wound in the head. A letter to his son at Notre Dame university requests care for his mother, indicating a deliberate self inflicted death.
Kokomo January 15 Mrs Mary Bryan Cobb marked her ninety eighth birthday at her daughter Mrs M Mc Daniele’s home in New London. She remains in good health. The family notes several relatives have reached 100, one living to 124.
Evansville Indiana January 15 three men named Joseph Linden Patrick Jones and John Norton were arrested on suspicion of being the burglars who blew open the Owensville safe Thursday. They carried five thousand dollars and a burglar tool kit.
Logansport Indiana reports Mr and Mrs A J Paul plan a public sale of their property to raise funds for moving to Dowie Zion in Chicago. They state proceeds will be placed at Dowie s disposal.
David Miller of Liberty township reports finding a large bald eagle dead in a field near Lafontaine in Wabash County. Authorities suggest the bird succumbed to the intense cold of the early part of last week.

Washington June 16 Director of the Census Merriam urges farmers to spend spare time before June next preparing to answer promptly and accurately questions on acreage crop values farm products costs fertilizers and labor for 1899. The aim is a full and accurate census.
Chicago detective testifies in Omaha on the board of education bribe scandal. F M Cowie accused of accepting pay to award blackboard contracts after Buckminster posed as contractor and trove a $250 bid. Buckminster says Cowie burned the payment draft in a hotel room.

Manila reports Gen John Bates troops active around Lake Taal as insurgents retreat south. Col Hayes with the Fourth Cavalry reaches Lipa where Spanish prisoners are held, Col Anderson takes Talisay with little resistance, Maj Cheatham disperses 400 insurgents near La Pablo, Third Cavalry suffers two killed and three wounded near San Fernando de la Union. January 22.
Attorney General Griggs filed answers in the District of Columbia Supreme Court seeking referral to a commissioner and permission to take testimony. He concedes war existed but disputes that Dewey s squadron captured Isla de Cuba Isla de Luzon and Don Juan de Austria, stating those ships were sunk. He argues captured property does not justify prize to Dewey and crew and also joined a similar answer in the Sampson case over Cervera s fleet destruction.
