Section Men Prevent Major Rail Wreck Near Georgetown

Near Georgetown last Friday morning section men prevented a head on collision between No 4 passenger train from New Albany and an east bound freight on Georgetown Hill. The brakes were applied and both trains stopped moments before disaster. one passenger, L Rosenbarg of Cincinnati, suffered a scalp wound and others were jolted. Hemenway to be seated in Senate on third Tuesday in January

Washington dispatch reports a decision by Controller of the Treasury Robert J. Tracewell District Attorney Kealing and Congressman Hemenway that Hemenway will be elected to the Senate on the third Tuesday in January Beveridge will be reelected on that date. Hemenway plans to honor the Evansville Old Soldiers Republican Club with a portrait. His committee assignments remain unsettled though Hale and Allison favor him for an early good committee post, likely appropriations.

Death of William Foreman Near English Leaves Large Family

William Foreman died at his home four miles north of English Tuesday morning from heart trouble while sitting in a chair. He had been in poor health for months. He leaves a wife and a large family of grown children. He was well known in the county and had prospered in farming after moving from Floyd county fever years ago. Funeral was held Wednesday from his home and burial followed at Stewart burying ground with many relatives and friends in attendance.

Supreme Court Rules Trustee Lacks Authority for Warrants

The supreme court held that a township trustee must act within law when issuing warrants for township debts and cannot enforce payment on warrants issued without proper authority. A $425 warrant by Michelltree School Township for school building materials was invalid. The ruling overturns prior circuits that had upheld the warrant after later approval. The decision limits trustees’ powers and requires proper authorization before warrants are issued.

Trustees Returns Show Republicans Hold Township Majority

New Albany Tribune reports election returns for township trustees favor the Republicans with a statewide pattern. Before 1900 parties split trustees evenly, four years ago Democrats led 149 to 0. latest results show Democrats 508, Republicans 608, independents seven. County school superintendent outcomes favor Republicans overall, with seven ties to be resolved by county auditors in several counties. Wayne county yields twelve of thirteen trustees Republican. May include ties broken by Republican auditors in five counties.
