Crawford Circuit Court Opens with Dense December Docket

The Crawford circuit court begins a two week term at the courthouse next Monday. Trials are listed for December 10 through December 21 including cases of public indecency, grand larceny, damages, trespass, and various civil suits. Several judges and parties are named with a long docket of public records.

Red Cross Membership Drive Boosts War Support

The American Red Cross plans a nationwide drive from December 16 to 25 to add 10,000,000 members with Crawford county aiming for 2500 new members. Each branch is urged to convene meetings, form a campaign committee, and mobilize volunteers to fund and aid wounded servicemen and sick alike.

Eastern Star selects officers at Saturday gathering

The Order of the Eastern Star elected its officers last Saturday night with H. W. Mack as Worthy Matron Nell Thornbury as Worthy Matron N E Gobbel as Associate Matron May Luckett as Conductress Selah Austin as Associate Conductress L A Helmbrecht as Secretary and J S Melton as Treasurer. A farmer offered beef at 16 cents a pound while a state law bans peddler licenses in cities and towns. The Red Cross held a church program at the Presbyterian church with music a talk by Rev. Cecil Atkinson and refreshments. Elder C W Parks urged attendance at church next Sunday services and Sunday school. A note recalls Gresham as a hero from Evansville. Community observers question who profits from corn meal sales in Rockport amid rising meat prices.

Draft draft registration rules expand exemptions revoke

Under new rules every registrant is restored to original status and all prior exemptions and discharges dated before December 25 are revoked. The Provost Marshal General says registrants must know their old number and any failure to comply is a misdemeanor with one year imprisonment and loss of rights, immediate induction possible.

Law Requires Army Pay Deductions and Family Allowances

The law mandates part of a service member’s pay to be given to his wife or wife and children, with the government providing a family allowance during service. Nearby dependents may also receive allowances. The American Red Cross chapters offer free guidance on eligibility and application, though blanks have not yet been issued. S. A. Beals, Co. Residents and students from Marengo attended a sale and Thanksgiving visits. Charley J. Jones of Louisville attended a funeral for Mrs. W. H. Tyter. Misses Jean and Helen McCrary of Princeton visited Miss Mettie Key. Many travelers including Edwin Weathers and family visited relatives in New Albany and English, Tipton, Huntingburg, and Bloomington during Thanksgiving.
