Washington December 6. The Senate turned to the Owen corrupt practices bill limiting expenditures in congressional and presidential campaigns. Both sides predict passage before adjournment. Senator Owen offered to delay his resolution for an investigation of the recent election in return for Republican support on curbing lavish spending.
Cheyenne prepares a week long commemorative program in July to mark the city’s fiftieth birthday and the Frontier’s Day centennial. The plan includes four days for Frontier’s Day events and a historical pageant tracing Western growth from Indian days to today.
The second mid winter meeting of the Saratoga Valley Stockgrowers Association convenes at City Hall Encampment at 1 PM December 28. Topics include a proposed one hundred percent increase in National Forest grazing fees and delegation plans for the American National Livestock Association in Cheyenne. A six o clock banquet and an evening ball are planned with round trip rail rate offers to encourage attendance.
Week starts cold across plains and upper and lower Mississippi Valley then warms after Tuesday. Snow or rain possible Tuesday or Wednesday in both regions with generally fair conditions otherwise and below normal temperatures. Rocky Mountain and Plateau: mostly fair with local snow likely Tuesday and Wednesday.
Argument began in Washington today in Wyoming versus Colorado over water rights for irrigation. The case concerns 125000 acres in the Greeley Poudre district in Colorado and 400000 acres in the Laramie plains district in Wyoming.
Following a Forest Service recommendation, 19 840 acres in Hahn s Peak Basin Elk River Park about 25 miles north of Steamboat Springs Colorado were eliminated from Routt National Forest by a presidential proclamation. The land, a mix of grassland and scattered woodland, has low value for watershed protection and agriculture due to high elevation and harsh climate. A nationwide classification is underway to assess agricultural suitability across national forests.
Fred Pilger a 42 year old Union Pacific employee and former Laramie resident attempted to kill his infant daughter in Denver Monday night. Mrs Pilger described repeated beatings as she tried to rescue the child. The family fled to the maternal grandmother’s home and police sought Pilger. Mrs Pilger was injured with a deep cut and bruises and reported the case to juvenile court.
State Auditor Forsyth orders county clerks to stop issuing bounties on predatory animals. The $6000 fund from the last legislature is fully expended, ending the fastest Wyoming has paid for fur and hides. Officials note high fur prices drive trapping profits and expect a new appropriation later.
J L Crabbe of the Wyoming Anti-Saloon League says if pre election pledges hold, a state wide prohibition constitutional amendment will be sent to the next legislature. He cites 44 of 57 elected representatives and 22 of 27 senators likely to back it. 38 representatives and 18 senators needed.
In Guernsey Wyoming on December 9 a mysterious horse illness is killing animals quickly. Several horses have died after sudden weakness, prompting letters to the Washington veterinary department for guidance. Some blame sage consumption while others suspect spinal meningitis. officials await word.
K. J. Kilburn on the Wheatland flats milked twenty cows from Nov 20 to Dec 1 lifting 128 1/2 pounds of fat from four cream cans. Testing averaged 51 to 52 percent butter fat, selling to the Wheatland creamery for 44.16. He fed alfalfa with no grain or silage and had access to running water at all times.
State treasurer Herman W. Gates told the governor and legislature that cuts in appropriations or a higher tax levy are needed. He noted the state fund was overdrawn by 147 085.04 on September 13 and that over ten years state expenses nearly tripled. The report faulted recent spending trends and named Meese and Jeanne as overloose critics.
