Deputy U S Marshal Cameron arrested eight Avamooe businessmen Monday on charges of espionage acts and obstructing government war efforts. Among them is former state senator L J Albrecht along with L L Kesler Frid Pfeific Albert Albrecht G A Elbert John H H Wortman Sam Strauz and Frid Albrecht. The indictment alleges conspiracy to hinder military service Liberty bond sales and false registration reports.
Harry F. Rice, organizer for the Nonpartisan league in South Dakota, is jailed in Yankton after serving a ten day petty larceny sentence in Armour, Douglas County. He reimbursed the merchant, but a prosecution followed. A prior sentence for stealing forty pounds of lead from the Omaha freight house in St Paul was suspended on good conduct. Judge Hanft may have Rice returned to Minnesota for probation violation and possible reformatory placement.
The Boy Scouts of America helped sell the first Liberty Loan Bonds totaling about 23 million dollars from 152000 subscribers. Seven thousand six hundred eighty six scouts earned the war service emblem for selling ten or more bonds, led by Fred Shleton of Troop 1 Mayfield Ky with 324 bonds totaling 24750 dollars. President Wilson praised the scouts and will award a U S flag to the troop selling the most licenses in the second issue.
Local board has no new news on the third contingent movement. Four drafted boys from nearby towns were rejected and sent home last Saturday. John Blore and Fred Petrie who trained at Fort Snelling have returned, with Blore joining the third contingent. Government policy curtails commissions, sending many student officers home to reduce future promotions.
