Emmons County Dakota offers fertile government lands near Williamsport. The region attracts American settlers and promises wheat barley and root crops with excellent yields. Seven frame schoolhouses, a Sabbath school, and weekly church services exist within ten miles. Central Dyborg likely accessible via a through route from this area.
Notice is hereby given that John A. Brow has fled notice of his intention to make final proof to support his claim for the southeast quarter of section in township 182 north range 77 west. He names witnesses William Southwick Albert H. Morrison Martin Flick Charles Parker to prove residency and cultivation. Post office address Winchester Oak. JOHN A. REA, Register.
The Williamsport Livona stage runs Mondays Wednesdays and Fridays at 8 am with an afternoon return. It stops at Livona on the Bismarck line, Frank Ares is agent, tickets for Livona sold at Frisbys drug store in Bismarck and riders reach Williamsport the same evening. Merchants Hotel Winona is well furnished with good table and comfort for guests, John Waldron proprietor. The paper laments repeated late delivery of the ready-prints for Williamsport, noting two late issues in the past month and blaming unclear fault, urging reliability from the stage-line and offices.
Local notes cover George Jennings and stores in Bismarck, visitors from Logan and Dane counties, school term extended, a skunk in an unfinished well in Uxbridge Oak, railroad progress toward Bismarck, and a social at E C Packer’s near Williamsport featuring Miss Della Packer. A juvenile cowboy, Dick Mitchell, arrives with pony herd. one pony dies en route, vet efforts fail.
A Thanksgiving Eve social and literary entertainment is planned at the schoolhouse. Mr. and Mrs. Baker invite neighbors for Nov 24 with admission set at $1. A meeting previously discussed forming a literary society but decided against it for now. Chairs for programs and refreshments were appointed with several committee members named.
Louis Seikler wife and child seek lodging at Emmons House. They present a registered letter to fool Landlord Bottomley about funds. Seiklers face confrontation as lawsuit with Fred Argast is decided for the opponent Squire Campbell rules against. Landlord urges them to leave county with harsh verdicts from Thomas and onlookers.
In Bismarck visitors are invited to stop at the Third Street Restaurant where tables are supplied with the best market fare. The rooms are described as comfortable and neatly furnished, promising a pleasant dining experience.
When in Bismarck, residents are advised to avoid K Brady and Co on Main Street and instead view their fine large stock of new light-running sewing machines.
Chairman announces refreshments for the Thanksgiving program at the school house. Everyone is invited to attend the exercises, sociable, and supper after. Bring a refreshment. Signed by Many A. Herrick.
Returns from nearly all counties in the Twenty-third District are in at Bismarck except Oliver and Billings. Emmons county ranks fourth in total votes cast, second only to Burleigh among east river counties. Kidder trails Emmons by 69 votes with two of its citizens running for the Legislature.
The suit Argast v Seikler was tried last Saturday before Justice Campbell. Witnesses were examined and after argument by counsel, the justice awarded the plaintiff 14.50. Margach v Bottomley also heard the same day for foreclosure of a mechanic’s lien on the house on the Major Dickey claim east of Williamsport. Bottomley made no defense.
A coal vein about thirty five feet deep near Williamsport is being developed by B S E Brindle. Two miners work in newly opened passages while a home made elevator and soon a trump elevator will boost output from about two and a half tons daily to higher production. Coal sold at the mine for 3.50 per ton, with expectations of lower prices as staffing and machinery improve. The vein appears to extend under several miles, with similar thick seams found nearby. The Brindle venture is hailed as a lasting fuel solution for Emmons County residents in the Williamsport area.
Wm D Smith & Co of Main Street Bis marck Oak invite Emmons County residents to visit and examine their fine furniture stock. Undertaking is a specialty with all orders promptly attended to.
Mrs. E. Ham on Main Street near Banner House, Bismarck, Dak., promises a good fit and latest fashions. Cuts by French system if desired. Thanks patrons for past favors and notes a change of location.
The Western Rural of Chicago promotes farmer rights and fights monopolies and food adulteration. It unites producers via the National Farmers' Alliance for mutual aid, offering a sixteen page home and farm paper priced at 1.65 dollars with sample copies available from publisher at 308 Tremont Street, Illinois.
The Commissioner of Pensions reports Missouri Slope counties with Burleigh at 51 pensioners and Emmons at 84. Morton has 24, Kidder 18, Mercer 6, McLean 5, and Oliver 1.
Among exhibitors at the St Louis Fair the Racine Farm and Warehouse Fanning Mills by Johnson & Field Racine Wis carried off the first premium. The mills are widely praised by farmers and grain men for their superior operation. The judges' award was well deserved according to Farm Field and Steckman.
