Why the Firelight Dances and Flickers
The firelight dances because gases trapped in coal burn as they escape, creating colored flames that flicker over the coal. Air flow at the chimney top and wind gusts make the flames twitch. Coke yields little flame as gases escape. much of the burning carbon leaves unburnt up the chimney, a waste in forming pretty fires.
