A Dickinson Press critique blasts T F Sheppard for alleged newspaper manipulation and fraud in Gladstone and Winona. It accuses him of deceiving locals, collecting money, and leaving town after petty thefts, comparing his actions to past schemes in Sykeston and warning readers of his continuing attempts to rob the public.
Bismarck updates include Frisby cures for corns at 25 cents and a drilling tale under an ant hill promising water. Reports mention sheriff appointments and missing cattle, plus a note on personal-property valuation standards and the Parker and Parkes drug and paint offerings in Bismarck.
Captain Bruce touring the Missouri Slope says free land is scarce in the West. He sought three townships but saw half a dozen in the area, couldn't find suitable land in the Aberdeen district, and noted Campbell and Walworth counties south of Emmons are well picked over. He implies future immigrants will move south as free tracts run out.
Messrs Orth and Stone of Hoskins return from the Capital to McIntosh County. The Herald editor and family will run housekeeping and newspaper operations under separate management going forward. The paper notes the need for different temperaments for composing, cookery, distribution, dish-washing, press work, and potato-paring.
W F Sim rall sent a bushel of 66 pounds from Bottineau County to New Orleans earning first premium as the best wheat sample from any land. Raised on Alex Sinclair’s Oak Creek Turtle Mountain farm, the exhibit drew samples from most counties, states, and nations, with North Dakota taking the top honor.
The Record notes the town’s eighteen month age with no weddings yet and predicts forthcoming marriages. It teases that springtime, flowers, and moonlight may spark matrimony, urging brave couples to lead and others to follow, as the Paper’s appetite for wedding cake grows.
Mr. David Yeater completes a new house and will host a Friday evening housewarming social and dance on May 22. He invites the public to attend. A previously inferred marriage plan is corrected. his sister Miss Ella will keep house for him.
A temperance meeting at the schoolhouse on Sunday May 10 approved a constitution requiring a total abstinence pledge. The society will complete its organization at the next meeting after Sabbath school on Sunday May 24. All are invited to attend and join. County School Superintendent Worst is visiting Winona.
Correspondence details settlers flooding the Winchester area with ample claims and a hoped for railroad along the old Fort Sully trail through Winchester. Community events include a Sunday service at Robert Maxwell’s house with Rev. G P Williams and H D Brown, a new Sabbath school led by J M Stouder, and 28 scholars enrolled. Other notes cover local travel to the Capital, schoolhouse fence contracts, and numerous arrivals and homestead moves across Paradise Township Beavers Creek and nearby areas.
The Williamsport Sabbath-school held its second session last Sunday with strong turnout. At the May 3 organization, officers were elected: Superintendent Miss Edna F. Connor, Assistant Superintendent Mr. D. H. Yeater, Secretary Miss Eva Campbell, Treasurer Miss Ella Yeater, Chorister Mr. D. R. Rupert, Organist Miss Eva Campbell, Librarian Mr. H. A. Armstrong. Sheriff Wade visited county seat during Board of Commissioners meeting and paid a legal printing bill, leading to a hurried press run and an incomplete visitors list.
A Fortnight Earlier notes Dakota people seed grain two to three weeks ahead of states at the same latitude. Spring arrives earlier than usual. Immigration boom continues. The Lamborn Hospital in Bismarck is ready to receive patients.
