Gen Leonard Wood led U S forces with Moro auxiliaries against hundreds of Moros who held a 2000 foot peak in Jolo Sulu. Attacking from Tuesday through Thursday March 8, American forces killed about 600 Moros and suffered fifteen dead and fifty wounded.
Susan B. Anthony died last Tuesday at her Rochester New York home. She was eighty six years old on February 20.
Anton Naaden of Winona county visited Pollock on Tuesday and Wednesday. Winfield Vermillion of Glanavon came for rope to lead his chickens to water. Jim Williamson, Strasburg wood butcher, renewed acquaintances in Pollock this week. Louis Durnbush of the Strasburg commercial club visited Wednesday and Thursday. Strasburg is experiencing a boom. W A Parr leaves for West Baden Indiana for a rheumatism cure. Miss Elizabeth Webster, recovering after leg amputation, is improving. A A Ostrum, Winona mason and contractor, reports busy carpentry season. Geo N Fiddler, Emmons county stockman, bought 59 Aberdeen Angus cattle from EB Eckert of Herreid. cattle moved through Pollock yesterday.
In town notes tell of raw weather with snow this week and numerous local movements. Readers learn of residents arriving from Hazelton and Aberdeen, trips to Idaho, and measles cases among Miss Lucy Shier and Miss Genevieve Braddock.
Frank Crawford of Nazelton learned by telegraph that his brother Ralph died suddenly at his Lisbon home. Ralph, about eighteen, had planned to move to Mazelton. He contracted a cold that developed pneumonia, leading to his death.
In Winona a youth who habitually beat his younger brother faced a life changing moment when the younger warned him to stop or be shot. A final beating with a club left the older unconscious and the first remark before recovery was a question about whether Ralph had shot.
A clipping from a Canadian paper reports the marriage of Lizzie Kinsella on the 14th of the month. The note, shared with Emmons county neighbors, joins well wishes for the bride and her husband and reflects ties to Glanavon district.
A catastrophic gas explosion in a Courrieres mine last Saturday caused over a thousand miner fatalities, marking one of the most tremendous losses of life in years.
