A reader list records Linton residents who donated to the Red Cross with amounts from 50 cents to 25 dollars. Names include Bosch, Irene Irvine, Haggard, Schulze, Walters, and many others, with churches and local groups contributing as well.
Friday night features a home talent minstrel show at the Opera House followed by a big dance to benefit the Red Cross. Local favorites perform stunts and entertain, promising an enjoyable evening for all attendees.
The Braddock Dramatic Club returned to our city to present The American Flag a patriotic wartime play. A full house enjoyed the performance with notable local talent and a sizable donation raised for the Red Cross. Afterward the Clio Club hosted the Braddock players at the W E Petrie home.
The Department of Justice says men of selective service age who depart the United States to dodge military duty will face trial on Selective Service Act violations upon their return, even if they come back after the war. The Attorney General authorized a statement noting ready access to information enabling complete lists of those who have left to avoid service.
Miss Theresa Keenan from Minneaplis trains 12 county ladies in Linton to teach others how to dry and can vegetables. Demonstrators from Strasburg Braddock and Temvik will present countywide canning and drying lessons as war demand reduces market supply and boosts canned goods prices.
Last Thursday Memorial Day events drew a large crowd in Linton with the Linton Band performing two patriotic pieces at 10 am. A parade formed to the cemetery where Rev. Swaney delivered a prayer and address. Ten third grade girls decorated soldier graves as E. H. Hardt played taps. A noon gathering at the Court House featured H. A. Armstrong of Hazelton delivering a patriotic address. Professor Smith led the band in the afternoon to close the day’s program.
A German American Bank sign was painted yellow Saturday night but the rest of the sign remained. Loyal locals fear the name offends some, and the bank plans to change it with state board approval to keep community unity during wartime.
Adam Schlosser of Strasburg was oiling a traction engine on the George Lynn farm west of Lintoff when the clutch engaged and tore away nearly half his left foot. He was rushed to Wolverton Hospital where the crushed part was amputated.
