A promotional notice from W. S. De Craff urges shoppers to visit the Leading Bargain House West of St. Paul Minneapolis or Chicago for ultra low prices on coats pants shirts socks and more. The piece promises 25 percent shoe savings and many items priced as low as 25 cents with trunks and bags available.
Emmons County observed multiple Fourth of July celebrations with parades races wrestling and dancing. In Examons Bune and Emmonsburg residents participated in readings speeches races including pony, free-for-all, and foot races, with prizes won by Barney Burbage, the Baumgarten and Pled Green horses, and contestants Eddie Coover Walter Kyes and Kelley. An evening dance featured Profs Whalen, Laverly, and Mr. Anderson.
On Independence Day in Williamsport a pleasant crowd gathered but lacked orderly plans. No start time or host for strangers. the schoolhouse stayed locked till after 3 PM. a makeshift rostrum formed from a bench as J N Roop opened exercises with the Declaration and D R Streeter delivered a brief address.
A lively Williamsport day featured pony and free-for-all horse races with Benz, Baumgartner, and Cotton entries, plus a ladies race won by Miss Vic Corey. Master Paul Kurtz led the boys in a fast foot race, delaying a baseball game. Evening festivities included a Woodmen ball with Laquee performers, midnight supper, and all-night dancing.
The Record notes no details yet on Glencoe events but reports a large daytime crowd and a well attended dance that evening on Monday.
A June 30 1897 wedding in Fort Yates North Dakota joined Thomas McCrory and Ella Spicer. Rev George A Reed officiated at 4 PM with close relatives present. Guests enjoyed a long display of gifts and a generous after-ceremony spread before the couple departed.
The Record prints a second confession from Philip Ireland alleging that he and Paul Holytrack killed the Spicer family with weapons including a gun, spade, fork, club and ax. Ireland describes the killings at Spicer’s, the aftermath, theft of valuables, and burning of incriminating clothing.
