Salisbury July 2 A passenger express carrying forty three travelers from Plymouth to London plunged off the rails in Salisbury. Twenty three were killed and seven seriously wounded, all Americans or Canadians mostly New Yorkers. Mayor McClellan of New York narrowly escaped and missed boarding. John E. McDonald of New York and four others were killed. The accident occurred despite an on time arrival and a normally safe run at high speed.
Washington June 30 The Fifty ninth congress closed a strenuous session approving railroad rate regulation meat inspection Pure Food and other reforms It fixed the Panama Canal type and authorized 39000000 for its year total appropriations approach 906000000 with 25000000 for new public buildings Naval buildup tempered by a required plan submission before bids The session also boosted state militia funding and enacted employers liability and private pension laws for disabled veterans.
Congress acted on major appropriations with a Panama Canal lock plan as Senate naturalization passes. Debate centered on public buildings and state allocations while House conferees upheld meat inspection in the agricultural bill. Senate focused on conference reports including railroad rate, pure food, and meat inspection provisions, all adopted.

Mrs James Tanner wife of the Grand Army of the Republic commander was killed in an automobile accident near Helena Montana on June 30. An automobile party including Governor’s wife Mrs J K Toole and General Lester Wilson traveling toward Fort Harrison went off a narrow embankment road after the driver turned to let a wagon pass. Mrs Tanner died on arrival at a hospital. others escaped serious injury.
Milwaukee June 28 The Democratic state convention endorses William Jennings Bryan as the presidential candidate for 1908. The platform calls for enforcement against trusts and monopolies, tariff revision, direct election of U S senators, and regulation of public service corporations. It also supports municipal power to regulate utilities, a 2 cent per mile rail rate cap, ad valorem taxation, and amendments to the primary law.
Dillonvale Ohio July 2 authorities investigate the Bradley miners riot revealing one dead two fatally injured seven seriously wounded and several others injured in the confrontation.
A June 28 report states a tornado devastated Titzewah Oklahoma nearly every building torn from foundations. Most residents escaped serious injury by taking shelter in cyclone caves. Livestock losses were heavy and crops were ruined.
Secretary Shaw offers 30 million dollars of Panama canal loan bonds at 2 percent interest dated August 1, 1908 with quarterly payments. Redeemable after two years, payable thirty years from date, tax exempt, available to national banks as security for circulation. Subscriptions due by July 20, 1906 at par value.
Minneapolis July 2 market round up lists wheat futures for July and September contracts with prices in cents per bushel and corresponding spot bids. It also notes on track and No 1 to No 3 Northern values with fractional cents indicating bid amounts.
New York June 29. Chairman Shonts of the canal commission declares the Panama canal will be completed in eight years. He spoke just before boarding the steamer Panama for the Isthmus with Chief Engineer Stevens.
In New York on July 2 the general strike of Plumbers Union No 2 for a wage increase from 4.75 to 5.25 dollars a day went into effect, drawing about 1,500 workers and affecting around 600 buildings. The demand for plumbers rises as hundreds more flat houses and apartments in upper Manhattan and the Bronx near completion, creating strong labor demand.

Frank Muniter, 15, shot a black bear near Maryville Rolette county. A wheat-field farmer saw the bear and alerted neighbors. Muniter mounted with a shotgun fired, hitting only the bear's temper. He later secured a rifle, wounded the bear, which charged him. His pony fled as the boy raced to safety until the bear collapsed from the wound.
The grand lodge of Masons closed its Fargo meeting with broad participation from every lodge in the state. Grand Forks will host next year. Visitors enjoyed a trolley ride and a temple stage show. New officers named include Grand Master Grant S Wager St Thomas and Deputy Grand Master John Reisbeck Dickinson.
Kid Hustin a Minot barber lies in a precarious condition with razor lacerations while Walter Stockton, colored, is in the county jail charged with assault with a deadly weapon. Stockton fled on a Soo passenger train but was recaptured by J. J Boyd and Fred Ehr. Hustin received three deep gas wounds and is said to be in serious condition. The quarrel began when Hustin accused Stockton of disturbing the household and keeping him and his wife awake.
Charles Kaatz of Sheldon drank a bottle of wood alcohol mistaken for grain liquor. He placed it on a cellar shelf and forgot it. While searching for something, he found the bottle, drank several sips, and suffered fatal convulsions.

Charles Kaatz of Sheldon died from wood alcohol after unknowingly storing the liquor in his cellar. He found the bottle months later, drank four drams, and died within moments, the result of contaminated alcohol.
