Major McLaughlin Drives Settlement Talks With Sioux
A Wakpala dispatch reports Major McLaughlin to Cheyenne River Agency after week of talks with Standing Rock Indians on opening surplus lands to settlement. Indians oppose lottery sales and liquor, press for long term leases and fewer government jobs, while noting many lands sold to speculators. They expect open lands not before fall next year and describe plans for 3000 homesteads in a more northern area. Also obituaries for Emma A. Adams recount a long South Dakota life and faithful church service.
