Samson and Sarah Tray lor journey west with their children to the Sangamon country. In Illinois they meet Lincoln era figures and face fever, fadings, and uprisings. Samson befriends preacher Cartwright, helps nurse Bim Kelso, uncovers suspected foul play around Harry Needles and Davis, and endures a harsh night at Honey Creek as the tale traces Lincoln era trials and abolitionist hopes.
