Bares Farm Distress: Farmers Lose Money at 1914 Costs
J. W. Shorthill told the Interstate Commerce Commission that freight rates on a car load of corn from Nebraska to Omaha now consume market value of 392 bushels for 118 bushels produced at 1914 costs. He cited 12 states saving 5 cents per bushel via co operative elevators, but higher freight and handling costs erase gains. Even at 1914 costs, farmers would lose money under current rates and prices as corn costs 55 cents to produce but sells about 46 cents in Omaha, leaving roughly 33 cents to the farmer after charges.
