Emmetsburg Board Defends South Side School Consolidation

The Emmetsburg school board and supporters defend the consolidation of the South Side and East Side primary schools citing declining attendance and the need for economical use of funds. Critics led by Miss Donovan allege misleading testimony, but the board asserts the record shows careful investigation, with Miss Donovan accused of coaching an attorney and pushing biased narratives while many families still send children across tracks to multiple schools.

Republicans Fill Ticket After Reluctant County Committee

The Republican county central committee met Monday and nominated Miss Ida Johnson of Ruthven for county superintendent and J A Slater for clerk. Most members opposed filling the ticket, echoing a June convention vote, but Henry Beckman and J C Bennett pressed the motion. The decision surprised many as the Democratic convention did not field candidates for treasurer, recorder, auditor, or coroner, and the party’s earlier stance suggested no canvass.

It questions how Republicans will accept Monday’s decision and suggests the June convention’s four-fifths vote against filling the ticket should carry weight.

Frank Clark attempted to deliver a message to Mr Beckman who urged him to enter and convey it. Beckman, a staunch republican, appeared reluctant but persisted in urging ticket filling. The public deserves to know the message’s substance.
