John Dalton extols country towns over cities, arguing life there blends two worlds with greenery, social ties, and shared kindness. He mocks urban crowds, calls the country town a humane habitat, and laments city anonymity while praising neighborhood warmth and natural beauty.

W L Morris of Palo Alto town brought two ears of Argentine corn grown in Palo Alto county to the Courier office. The ears were the smallest and meanest seen, with Morris noting London quotations for corn at $161 per 100 pounds of American corn and $111 for Argentine corn, suggesting possible but limited value.
Wednesday brought a heavy downpour with Pocahontas recording six and a half inches in twelve hours, possibly the heaviest in ten years. Another strong rain on Sunday matched the Wednesday totals. Ground is thoroughly soaked, ideal for plowing, and pastures are fresh and green. farmers hope for dry spells until late fall or next spring.

The Spirit Lake Methodist church cleared the debt on its new building with 9000 raised in morning services and a 1400 subscription in the afternoon. A. M. Johnson donated 6500. W. H. Gaylord sold a quarter section farm to J. Sels vold for 190 per acre, near the city. Gaylord plans future arrangements.
John Kirtz Graettinger visited Mallard friends at Benny Schmidt's home last week. Schools opened last Monday with full attendance. C C Larson went to Minneapolis for the State fair. Vincent Bigley returned from Sioux City for Labor Day. Russell George back at Grinnell College on Monday. Rev Smylie led Sunday evening services. Mayme McCarty left for Ames for State College. Anna Redmann visited from Emmetsburg. Lulu Montgomery left for Cylinder to teach this year. Preston Fahnestock on a business trip to Irmis this week. Mrs E S Gando, oper ation patient, returned home from Estherville Sunday evening.
Bert Hughes reports Adler-i-ka, a buckthorn bark glycerine mixture, is widely used in Emmetsburg. The remedy, famous for curing appendicitis and claimed to cleanse both lower and upper bowels, promises immediate relief from constipation after a single dose and easy stomach.
The Emmetsburg region reports multiple items including a public school building expansion in Rodman, a $6000 improvement at Tobin college in Fort Dodge, Swea City street electroliers funded by merchants, and a 50th wedding anniversary for Mr and Mrs George Griffith of Milford.
