Collo Loeb dismisses 73 customs staff and abolishes office

New York Nov 20 Collector William Loeb Jr announced the removal from the customs service of seventy three employees and several weighing division officials for irregularities. Dismissals include James F Vail George E Bedell James P Hyland and Joseph C Carroll plus ten assistant weighers three inspectors and one assistant ganger. He notes ongoing investigations since March 4 and adds that investigations continue. Demurrers to indictments against Benjamin dernagel of American Sugar Refining and six minors were served and will be argued next Monday.

Wickersham keynote at Kansas City banquet on sugar fraud probe

Attorney General George W. Wickersham spoke at the John Jay treaty banquet, outlining the sugar duties fraud inquiry. He said the aim is twofold: recover back duties owed and identify those guilty of fraud for punishment, adding the investigation is ongoing and will be thorough with the available machinery.

Des Moines reports Dr. Louis A. Thomas, Iowa state board of health secretary, who retires Jan 1 1910, issues his farewell bulletin criticizing the board as backward in sanitation and statistics. He urges reform, a three member sanitary commission, better funding and laws to make Iowa a leader in sanitary matters. He teases future remarks after retirement and hints at addressing specific board members.

Hospital changes hands Sisters of Mercy take charge Centerville Iowa

Centerville investors transfer the six year old hospital to the Sisters of Mercy from Council Bluffs after improvements totaling 14000. Stockholders require nonsectarian policy and access for nurses visitors and patients, with ministers allowed to see patients. The move ends the plan to gift the county a hospital nucleus.

Michigan Man Recoups Losses In Schemed Scam Case

AL Nelson of Alma Michigan testifies in district court about recovering his losses from John R. Dobbins. Nelson recalls that after the con, they pursued the man and forced repayment of $525 from the $2,500 taken, and vows further pursuit as he earns it. The witness describes the suspect as crafty and repentant.

Waterloo man Joseph Enasha a Civil War veteran willed his extensive property to D. R. Weaver his comrade to distribute among Iowa charities subject to district court approval. He left no heirs and owned a Missouri River land claim near Platte South Dakota with farm buildings and ten lots.
