Thomas F Bergman 59 farmer from near Farmersburg died at his home after severe burns from a tractor backfire while plowing. Funeral arrangements by She Martin Funeral Home with burial likely at Graettinger. Survived by wife Mamie Ruby Bergman and his parents Amos and wife.
Former Emmetsburg resident O V Critz died in University hospital Town City after years of ill health. Funeral at St Thomas church Emmetsburg with Rev James Shanahan officiating and burial at St Johns cemetery. Survived by widow seven children and multiple siblings. Critz served on Emmetsburg school board and active in local democratic circles.
Bounds Brakke, daughter of Mr and Mrs Joan Brakke of Blue Earth and Howard Bounds, son of Mrs J H Bounds of Emmesburg, were married at Sibley October 28 in a double ring ceremony conducted by Rev L D Havighurst of the Methodist church. Attendants were Mr and Mrs Howard Larsen of Spirit Lake Bir Bounds is a type operator at the Post Register in Blue Earth where he has worked for many years.
Ormo Cottington of Ayrshire, chairman of the Palo Alto county board of supervisors, was injured last Thursday in an automobile accident at an intersection near the Kermore hotel. Carl Hoffert, a local contractor, drove west while the Cottingtons’ car went south. Hoffert was unhurt and Cottington and his son William crawled from the overturned vehicle. William Cottington sustained minor lacerations. Ormo Cottington received broken ribs, a bruised leg, and a minor concussion and was treated at Palo Alto hospital.
Lawrence D. Brennan reports 2 060 final soil conservation payment applications were sent this week to Des Moines. The forms cover Palo Alto county tenants and out-of-town owners. Checks are expected in Palo Alto county by December after review in Des Moines and Chicago offices. A new government moisture meter for testing corn has arrived, enabling local testing locally instead of sending samples to Des Moines.
The regional Parent Teachers association conference met in Estherville at the high school with delegates from Clay Emmet Dickinson Palo Alto and Kossuth counties and others within driving distance. Sessions ran morning to afternoon and covered parent education officer training and membership with leaders from Ft Dodge Emmetsburg Spencer and Jefferson among speakers.
Byron Robinson of Graettinger told Emmet county authorities that thieves entered his two mile north two mile west Graettinger farm home last Saturday and stole 47 dollars in small change. The Robin sons savings included 34 dollars in pennies. No clues yet and a reward is offered for information or conviction of the burglars.
At a meeting of the Iowa Druggists Association in Ruthven Ralph Doud na Spirit Lake was named district president succeeding Bert Hughes. Pat Lemmas Milford was elected vice president and Eugene Linden Ruthven named secretary replacing E W Lusby Algona. A seven o clock dinner followed the session with addresses to masrich and state officers.
Emmetsburg Irish defeated Estherville 13 to 0 at Estherville with touchdowns in the second and third quarters. Parish scored on a 25 yard run and Hand added a second after sustained drives. Handale kicked the extra point as Emmetsburg closed the season, finishing fourth in the conference and noting several seniors will depart.
Inheritance tax appraisers Charies Duhigg H. M. Hel gen and J. W. Frost filed an inventory and appraisement for August Clesle estate. Net value listed about 182000 with real property mainly farms in Emmet Clay and Palo Alto counties. Personal property includes bank accounts stocks bonds notes furniture clothing livestock and farm equipment. The late Palo Alto county stock buyer died last summer in Ruthven.
The Democrat-Reporter campaign nears its 9 00 PM Friday close with a tight race and only a few votes deciding. The notice urges readers to subscribe now to save time for candidates and states a paper costs about 3 cents per week, promoting subscriptions as a value and as support for local candidates.
Very Rev. W. F. Mason reports excellent patronage at the Assumption church bazaar and dinner held in St. Marys gymnasium. The Ladies Aid sponsored dinner served from 5 p m. to completion. Bingo and stands added to the success and a Monday dance, with Al Menke Band, drew a large crowd praising the new South Side gym floor.
Emmetsburg High School will present The Haunted House a mystery farce by Owen Davis on Tuesday November 28 in the auditorium. The Village Players cast includes Morgan Donald Kerwick Emily Ruth Helgeson Jack Leo Fredrickson Thomas Richard Inzie Duncan James Brown Isabel Claudia Shea Ezra Dean Hofstad Ed Alton Newland Morgan Hunter Soper Evans Kenneth Edge with student director Alice Jane VanGorden and stage manager James Neary.
W Stevens, former West Bend resident, died October 25 in Springfield Illinois from heart trouble and pneumonia after surgery. Funeral October 28 at Ellinger and Koons Funeral Home officiated by Rev Tupper. Interment Oak Hill cemetery. Pallbearers were nephews Robert Sutton Walter Stevens Robert Stevens Louis Shantz Arthur Turley and Gene Sexton. Stevens born September 1 1875 in Springfield aged 64 years 1 month 25 days. Survived by wife five sons five daughters four brothers and sisters six grandchildren and other relatives. He lived in West Bend area before moving to Fort Dodge Des Moines and Springfield earlier. He married Hattie B Turley in 1896 and again in 1937 after first wife died.
Emmetsburg Junior College opens practice under Ellwood Madden with only two returning lettermen John Sewell and John Thompson. A 16 game conference schedule laid out by athletic director William Ketchen features two games each against Britt Sheldon Webster City Estherville Waldorf Pt Dodge Northwestern and Worthington Minnesota J C. Other returnees include George Bryant Don Edge and several others with a large roaster supporting two squads计划.
Ruthven visitors Mr and Mrs W M Steidl traveled from Ruthven to Spokane and Wenatchee to tour sites including the Grand Coulee Dam irrigation project described as a future world class engineering feat. They viewed Wenatchee orchards and brought home game bird specimens.
Secretary Charles Sproul of the Emmetsburg Chamber of Commerce announced that the town will observe Thursday November 30 as Thanksgiving Day. The local post office will also be closed for the legal holiday, with further notices to follow in next week’s Emmetsburg newspaper.
Local high school band members bought two sousaphones an oboe and four French horns for the group. The band includes ninety five students and is led by instructor Arthur Mullen. They plan a winter concert in December or January.
The Emmetsburg fire department will hold its annual Feather party on Monday and Tuesday, November 27 and 28 at the Storck garage on East Main Street. Festivities start at 7 p.m. with games contests and hundreds of turkeys geese and ducks awarded to attendees.
Harriet Johnson daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gerard Johnson of Cylinder wed William Fries son of Mrs. Mary Fries of Rodman. Rev. Wm Weit officiated at Whitte more rectory. The couple plans a brief honeymoon in Minneapolis after a reception.
Thursday meeting of the Swastika club discussed the year's calendar and planning the Red Cross drive. After business, Mrs John Gocders led an artists program at the home of Mrs Sam Henkeling with topics of local interest and roll call responses.
At a regular American Legion post meeting in Forest City ex service men enjoyed a Dutch feed and informal entertainment. Vie Stueland, state vice commander for districts 2 5 and 3, urged keeping the country out of war and noted the armistice remains in effect. Adjutant reported 45 members signed for 1940 and the commander urged dues from all eligible members.
St Marys Academy Emmetsburg observes National Book Week with activities across grades. Students perform essays dramas and artwork including a book drive led by seniors and third graders, with prizes for top collectors and an early dismissal for the winning room.
Preparations are made to boost Palo Alto County Christmas Seals sales this year. Officers have been elected and committees formed to begin on Thanksgiving day. Proceeds fund tuberculosis prevention and control efforts.
Clarence Triggs of Ayrshire was injured last week while helping with the corn harvest at Burnel Jones farm near Ayrshire. His hand was tangled in a cutting machine causing a bad injury.
The Campaign Department announces relocation from the old Postoffice Building to new offices in the Kenmore Hotel building behind the Bob Conlon Barber Shop. First door north of the Liquor Store.
Very Rev W P Mason pastor of Assumption church says Luchter Decorating Company of Milford has been engaged to decorate the interior starting next week. They are currently decorating the Cathedral at Sioux City and will complete the Milford church by Christmas.
Mrs Martha E Young of Colorado Springs died during the weekend at her son C A Young’s home in Emmetsburg. Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Meth Church in Emmetsburg. The remains were brought back to Emmetsburg with Mrs Darlind accompanying. Short services at Evergreen Cemetery followed. Pallbearers included Louis Peterson George Beatty Edward Thompson Harland Soper J S Atkinson and Harry Pfifner. Mr Young, once custodian of the local Methodist church, died about 1916. C A Young of Colorado Springs attended the burial with other family members.
Olaf Nelson a farmer two miles north and eight miles from the city says he will conduct a closing out sale of oil stock and machinery on February 20 1940. He offers a full line of farm machinery and tools and numerous purebred Holstein cows.
Sale at John’s department store continues through Saturday with remaining days to buy merchandise at unusually low prices. The event began on November 8 and is still ongoing for the public to shop.
The Lions Club with help from Rotarians and others collected over 1 000 pieces of clothing Thursday in Emmetsburg. Much of it new or nearly new is being distributed by the three local schools to homes in need. Lions committee and workers thank city households for hospitality and effort.
In district court Judge Fred M. Hudson handed jail terms to three men for liquor offenses. Stub Easton received one year for illegal possession. Oscar Johnson and Alfred Burt of Rodman were fined $200 and costs after pleading guilty to illegal sale. Daniel Luttoe of Emmetsburg got six months and a $100 fine for assault. sentence suspended on good behavior and he was paroled. Ernest F. J. Oldenburg of Graettinger won $70,250 from Equitable Life Assurance in a back payments case alleging denial due to disability.
Grant Nelson marks six years in Emmetsburg by a store wide sale of his entire stock of groceries and meats. The anniversary sale runs from November 17 to November 25.
Mrs L W Swanson died at home Monday after an illness of one day from acute indigestion She was born July 4 1883 near Carlock IL and was 51 She married Leo Swanson on August 24 1910 Rev Burton Y Neal officiated Survived by husband son Rex parents Rev and Mrs John Sutton two brothers Wesley and Frank Sutton of Estherville and two sisters with one brother preceding in death
The West Bend library collected 40 dollars last week from student screenings at the public school house Monday afternoon and a public showing at the West Bend theatre Tuesday evening. The films were shown by Chuck Amann.
The Emmetsburg newspaper acknowledges a printing error omitting Martin Thompson from the list of merchants and county officers in a page ad. Thompson bought space from the Legion boys. he is an electrician and a veteran. We regret the oversight.
