Secretary Gage denies planning to leave the cabinet and says he has not decided his post March 4 moves. New York sources state Lyman J. Gage will resign and Charles G. Morro Castle sails to Havana on maiden voyage with Elihu Root aboard

The Morro Castle departed New York on her first Havana trip carrying distinguished passengers including Secretary of War Elihu Root, Havana customs officials Colonel Bliss and G. Bulle, and a customs collector. Root said he aims to observe Cuba's general condition, not pursue a specific objective, and expects to be away about two weeks.

McKinley Wins Nebraska By About Seven Thousand

Early returns from Nebraska indicate McKinley carries the state by roughly seven thousand votes with the governorship still teilweise undecided pending final official totals. State ticket split: fusionists win lieutenant governor, attorney general, and land commissioner. Republicans win auditor, treasurer, and superintendent. Legislature likely split Senate fifteen Republicans and fifteen fusionists with one vacancy. House about fifty one Republicans and forty nine fusionists.

Ferrell Sentenced to Electric Chair for lane murder

In Munysville Ohio Judge Melhorn overruled a new trial motion for Roslyn Ferrell, convicted of first degree murder in the Aug 10 killing of Express Messenger Charles Lane. Ferrell is sentenced to be electrocuted on March 10, 1901, and will await execution at the Ohio Penitentiary after remarks at sentencing.

R G Sun Dead Head of Mercantile Agency Firm

R G Dan head of the mercantile agency arm of R G Dan & Co died in the city from cirrhosis of the liver. Born in Chillicothe in 1826, he started in a country store and moved to New York to join Tappan & Douglass. He became partner, then senior partner of RB G Dun & Co before his death. his widow Mary D Bradford of Milwaukee survives.

Valet Mowbray Wins $5,000 Against Howard Gould

In New York on November 12, a jury awarded valet Frank Mowbray five thousand dollars in his suit against Howard Gould, son of the late Jay Gould. Mowbray claimed Gould hired him for life at thirty dollars a month after injuring his sight and other injuries from an incident aboard Gould’s yacht on July 4, 1893, and that he was discharged once the statute of limitations barred further action.

Lieutenant Commander Stokeley Morgan A N retired who fired the first gun at the Battle of Manila Bay died at his Roxbury home. Death was due to paralysis. He was 41 and had the distinction of firing the first shot in the battle.

General MacArthur, commander in the Philippines, reports that Aguinaldo abandoned arms and shifted to guerrilla warfare. he notes dispersed Filipino formations and widespread minor actions, with 268 American deaths and 3,227 Filipino deaths from Nov 2 1894 to Sept 1 1900, and stresses troop strain and need for a large American military presence amid a republican government push.
