County Superintendent Marie Burns announces American Education Week November 5 to 11 with rural schools emphasizing education for lifestyle, self realization, and civic responsibility. Daily topics include religion, self-reliance, human relationships, economic efficiency, civic duty, love of learning, and education for freedom.
Charles McGinnis former Palo Alto county resident died Monday afternoon at Kossuth hospital in Algona after a stroke ten days earlier. Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Algona Methodist church with Rev. F Earl Burgess officiating. He was born April 6 1870 in Illinois and later farmed near Mallard before moving to Algona for his home.
Trainers and Bob Klingaman owners of the Tally Ho Cafe on East Main Street hosted a fish fry Friday night for friends. Guests enjoyed Lost Island Jake pike, shoe string potatoes, salad and trimmings. The Democrat publisher attended and the crowd praised the hosts for the dinner and entertainment.
A large number of Emmetsburg residents plan to attend the Iowa University versus Notre Dame game in Iowa City this Saturday. Most will travel by car. capacity attendance is expected. The teams have met once before with Iowa University winning by a narrow margin.
The Emmetsburg Democrat and Thors Reporter campaign ends the second period at 9 p m Friday. L C Hahn 73 of Mallard died Sunday at home after years of illness. Funeral services were held at his home and at the Mallard Methodist church with Rev M M Schaper. burial in Rush Lake cemetery. He leaves a widow, three daughters, sisters, brothers, and sixteen grandchildren.
George Leary 32 of Palo Alto County died suddenly Saturday afternoon. Funeral services were held Tuesday at St. Thomas Catholic Church with a requiem high mass. Interment was in St. John’s Cemetery. He was born March 17, 1907 in Curlew Iowa and lived most of his life there. He married Eunice Street in Whittemore in 1934 and worked as a barber until ill health forced retirement. Survived by his widow, his mother in Curlew, and four brothers and a sister.
Jack Burns a prominent Great Oak township farmer retired to Emmetsburg and has resigned as clerk of Great Oak township after fifty years of service. The long serving public official ends decades of local government work with his departure.
Joy James Dorothy Kerwick and Ethel Smith were chosen as Hobo Queens at a Worthington Junior College W A event. The day featured games games volleyball badminton tennis soccer and more with six Junior Colleges represented in skits. Dorothy Frost Evelyn Meade Dorothy Grohe Edna Skowbe and others attended from Emmetsboro with instructor Mrs. Martha Ritter.
Miss Katherine Wernert of Algona is hospitalized at Kossuth Hospital after pelvic fractures sustained in Algona. Her advanced age and fracture position prevent surgery. she formerly lived in Emmetsburg several years ago.
Mrs W H Morling was elected one of three lay leaders of the Algona District of the Methodist church. Clifford Norton of Algona and Mr Irvin Thee of Lake Mills are named Associate Leaders. The program aims for greater lay participation with the leaders in charge of this effort.
Emmetsburg friends mourn the death of Dr. Ted Grady at 1:30 a.m. Tuesday in Windom Minnesota. The 44 year old veterinary surgeon had been active in practice and had recently married Elizabeth. Funeral services were held in Windom with burial in Windom Catholic Cemetery. Grady was born in Iowa Falls and grew up in Great Oak township before his education at St. Joseph's College Dubuque.

St Marys six man football closes season with a 26-0 win over the Alumni. The Southsiders total 71 points to 48 for opponents. Tom Neibauer passed to Storck and Culligan, with notable players Storck, Culligan, Dub Storck and others contributing to the season.
The Catholic Daughters of America held their regular meeting at the Knights of Columbus hall Tuesday evening. Very Rev W F Mason presented the first lecture in a series on The Mass. The next talk will be by Rev Lea McEvoy of Ruthven at the group's February session.
In Estherville a patient, M. J. Anderson of Graettinger, is treated in a local hospital for blood poisoning after stepping on a nail.
Mr and Mrs Louis Peterson of Emmetsburg observed their fiftieth wedding anniversary with a 1 pm dinner for 39 at the Methodist church parlors. A weekend open house followed at their home from 3 to 6 pm with tea served. They were married November 2 1888 in Forest City and moved to Emmetsburg in 1908. Mr Peterson, 71, was a Rock Island railroad employee for 51 years. They have 11 children, 10 grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
Assumption parish hosts its annual bazaar and dinner on Sunday, November 12. Dinner starts at 5 p.m. with baked chicken, dressing, whipped potatoes, gravy, cut green beans, buttered cabbage, and more listed in the menu.
About thirty five relatives and friends surprised Mr and Mrs William Berke of Osgood to celebrate their 23rd wedding anniversary with 500 and Chinese checkers played and baskets and refreshments. Mrs Alfred Wishman was honored at a miscellaneous shower at Mrs Ervan Miller's home. Albert Oxley of the naval training station in Great Lakes IL arrived Friday to visit his mother Evabelle Oxley and then left for San Diego California to join hospital corps and attend a trade school.
Armistice Day shifts schedule as the Emmetsburg versus Estherville high school football game will be played in Estherville Friday at 8 PM. This final casco clash for both teams is expected to draw a large crowd from Emmetsburg.
County Treasurer Cap Nelson reports 91.2 percent of the total tax levy collected by year end 1939 with 589583.46 of 846199.52 realized. Taxes unpaid by December 4 will be sold at the annual tax sale.
John P. Davidson of Sossuth County died at Cherokee after a 19 day hospital stay. He was 39 years 11 months and 10 days old, a Palo Alto county farmer living near Cylinder. Preceded by his wife, he is survived by a son and a daughter. Funeral arrangements were incomplete with services expected at Foy Funeral Home and burial at Evergreen Cemetery.
Harry L Shillinglaw 53 an automobile executive died recently in Good Samaritan Hospital Los Angeles after attending a banquet at Annadale Country Club in El Monte his death followed a collapse He was married to Nelle Sturdevant and once ran a restaurant near Emmetsburg The family noted his death from Santa Monica California and he is survived by his wife and three children Louise Duncan of Exeter California David Shillinglaw of Los Angeles and another daughter.
Pheasant season for 1939 begins Sunday November 12 and runs through Monday and Tuesday. Daily shooting hours are 12 noon to 5 pm. Licenses cost 1 dollar in Tomah and 15 dollars for non residents. A limit of three male pheasants per day and six in possession. Females are illegal to shoot. Armistice Day court closure noted.
Mr. and Mrs. returned from a month in California with friends. They enjoyed the west coast scenery and described the trip as a pleasant vacation.
Dr C A Hauschen a former Emmetsburg resident died last Thursday in a Worthington Minnesota hospital after a brief illness described as a carbuncle on the neck that poisoned his system He lived at Brewster Minnesota and the remains were to be taken to Emmetsburg for burial services at 1 30 p m Sunday at the Methodist church
