World War veteran badly injured in corn picker accident

John Mormon a 27 year old overseas World War I veteran was injured Tuesday at the Oliver Twait farm near Cyl inder when his right arm was caught in a corn picker he operated He was alone and his plight went undiscovered for over an hour He was found and freed after Harold Lewis a fellow worker arrived Mormon had shut off the machine and was taken to Emmetsburg hospital where doctors amputated above the elbow His condition was listed as satisfactory the next day He had left the army last fall after long service and had worked at the Twait farm since last August

Junior College To Hold First Dance Nov 28

Emametsburg Junior College schedules its first large dance of the season for Thursday November 28 after the basketball game against Estherville Junior College. Vern Wellington leads the orchestra. high school students, their dates, and collegians’ guests attend. The organizing committee consists of the college girls. The dance is informal not formal and sweaters and skirts are discouraged.

Christmas Seal Plans Launched in Palo Alto County

Groundwork for the 1946 Christmas Seal sale was laid at the fall meeting of the Palo Alto County Tuberculosis Association on November 2 at Ure Congregational church. Esther Simonson, the association vice president, outlined the 1946 program and previewed 1947 activities aimed at strengthening safeguards against tuberculosis spread in Palo Alto County. Mrs. J. R. Carney, county chairman, distributed materials and instructions to town and township Seal chairmen.

Auto Misses Picker Ands In The Ditch

Mrs. Rudolph Hanover of Whitte moré and her three children narrowly escaped serious injury when their automobile missed a turn on a rural road north of Cylinder. The car veered left across the road and struck a harvesting machine before landing in a ditch and overturning. Mrs. Hanover and two children were thrown out, one child remained in the car. all were unhurt.

Mishaps While Hunting Injuries Reported in Two Incidents

Two accidental shootings in the past week wounded youths near Graettinger and at an otherwise quiet scene. A boy aged 13 in Graettinger was shot in the foot by a discharged rifle round, injuring his foot and sidelining him for weeks. Nearby, a young man sustained ankle injuries when a nephew’s gun discharged while they were bird hunting.

Drizzle Eases as Harvest Weather Clears in Emmelsberg

A light drizzle fell in Emmelsberg on Wednesday ending the wet spell, with dry weather to follow. Farmers welcome the brief lull but say more drying days are needed before they can harvest their bumper corn crop.

Palo Alto County election results show narrow GOP gains

Frank Koch of West Bend and Richard Miller of Graettinger won county contests in Palo Alto. Koch was elected state representative defeating John Kacharsky by 474 votes. Miller won sheriff over incumbent McCaffrey by 267 votes. L. C. Phillips retained supervisor seat with a 249 vote margin. Frank Foley won re election to the board from district three by 59 votes. Robert Blue carried the governorship by 38 votes in the county amid a national GOP trend.
