Washington dispatch reports Lord Pauncefate British ambassador to the United States died at the embassy at 5 35 am after a week of improvement followed by a sudden decline His death came as officials including Secretary Hay and President Rongere sent condolences Flags flew at half mast over embassies and legations The passing concluded nearly fifteen years of service representing Great Britain in Washington with Mrs Pauncefate and the ambassador’s family at his side.
Biographical sketch honors Lord Pauncefote the first British ambassador to the United States and dean of the diplomatic corps in Washington. Born in Munich 74 years ago to an ancient British family, he served as attorney general in Hong Kong 1865 and diplomat in Washington from 1889. His work included Bering Sea, arbitration, reciprocity, and the Hay Pauncefote treaty. The news of his death provoked shock at the British foreign office and U.S. embassy with condolences to the widow.
Wemie British Columbia May 26 The Coal Creek mines suffer heavy fatalities with estimates ranging from 150 to 175 dead as rescuers fight afterdamp and dangerous air.
