Robert Forey six year old of Laurens was crushed under a car in the Laurens business district Saturday night and died soon after. He was struck by a vehicle driven by Les ter Richardson a high school senior. Witnesses say the boy dashed into the street after becoming tired and confused as the car approached. The driver was not arrested. He was the son of Mr and Mrs Clyce Parsy.
County Farm Bureau tours to State College announced by Grant Chaplain Service director of farm schors. Delegates from northeast section visit June 26, from northwest June 27, and from southeast June 28. Event outlines tours of experimental farms and livestock inspections on campus.
Jack Seeley sold his Humboldt billiard parlor last week to Vince Exims. Ennis has possession. Seeley previously ran the business in Emmetsburg for years before relocating to Humboldt.
Washington D. C. May 6 A legislative loophole allows millions of dollars to flow abroad from American farmers through low priced Asiatic starch imports. Bill H. R. 6961 seeks a 2 percent per pound excise tax on domestic processing use of imported tapioca and sago starch to curb noncompetitive imports. The measure, backed by farm groups including American Farm Bureau, Farmers National Grain, and the National Grange, highlights January February 1930s import totals and compares starch uses to Iowa farm output.
Graettinger high school seniors staged Oh Doctor at Hawkeye Monday evening with strong attendance. Directed by Miss Vivian Kelly and Joe Ball, the cast included Peter Dunn Kermit Jensen Phil Bradley Lawrence Jensen Jim Davis Liope Larson and many others delivering a lively production that drew praise for the acting and entertainment value.
Allen Campbell son of Mr and Mrs G R Campbell of this city completing his third year in engineering at Iowa State College Ames was recently elected recording secretary for Tau Beta Pi a national honor society for engineers Membership in this organization is limited to the upper one fourth in scholarship Campbell is studying both electrical engineering and general engineering and expects to receive two degrees
Dr. P. G. Grimm of Spirit Lake suffered broken ribs serious gits and bruises when his car overturned on high No 9 east of Superior last Thursday night. He was en route to Estherville to present a medical paper. Soft spots in the grave are believed to have caused the car to lose control and crash into the embankment.
Former Canadian Mounted Police officer R. Montague will speak in Algona on Monday, May 71. Montague served over two decades in the RCMP, including four years in Arctic exploration and work with Eskimos.
Ak-Sar-Ben race track in Omaha reinstates thoroughbred racing after six years with a 125000 dollar purse. Key stables including Black and Gold Benny Creech and EB Fain will race over a 31 day meet ending July 4. About 700 horses will be stabled, total prize money around 135600 dollars, top stake 1003 dollars, and daily racing plus rain or shine operations. Transportation rates and facility upgrades accompany the return to county fair premium funding via admissions taxes.
Mrs. Fred B. Dodge, 68, died early Thursday at home in Ruthven after years of ill health and two years bed bound. Funeral Saturday at Sacred Heart Church with Rev. Leo McEvoy officiating. interment in parochial cemetery. Born November 1, 1866 in Ridgeway Wisconsin, she moved to Ruthven in 1911. Survived by husband Fred, two daughters Anny and Agnes Miller, four sons Gardner Racine Raymond Madison Bob Kenosha, two brothers James and John Torphy, and sister Anna Torphy. She was a Gold Star mother and Legion Auxiliary member. her son Fred died in service.
Foundation work has begun on the modernistic House of Tomorrow in Spencer. Built by A. P. Nelson, the model home will be completed early in July and opened to the public late in September, furnished and sponsored by the Spencer Chamber of Commerce in cooperation with Mr. Nelson. Spencer Construction Company holds the contract.
West Bend school board hired Miss Frances Schambers of Corwith as fifth grade and Miss Ruth Stenberg of Jewell as second grade for the coming year. A superintendent and home economics instructor have not yet been selected by the board.
Pigeons raced across Iowa are protected by law though many are shot by sportsmen as they rest near rivers. Regular flights occur weekends with clubs sending birds eastward in small groups. A World Pair banded pigeon found near Hartley shows losses in the race from Antis to Chicago in 1933. The Moline Pigeon Club works with Iowa Fish and Game to locate owners of birds found in the state.
Editor and Mrs. Frank Clark of Garner travel to Annapolis Maryland for the graduation of their son William Clark from the U S Naval Academy. He is a graduating midshipman and recently received the Thompson trophy for promoting athletics at the Academy. The family will visit Washington D C and return home for a brief Garner visit.
County Recorder reports 1100 plus fishing and hunting licenses issued so far this year. About 500 fishing licenses and 600 combination licenses shipped from her office. April 1935 totals rise 15 percent over 1934 with $45,231.50 year to date receipts. Combination licenses jump to 21,083 this year from 7,648 last April.
Rice of the Call Theatre announces a Junior Theatre will open in Algona on July Fourth. The new venue replaces the Boettcher garage, with a rebuilt front, upholstered seating, 100 stadium style rear seats, air conditioning, Western Electric sound gear, rooftop advertising, and upper rooms converted to air conditioned bridge rooms for ladies to play cards.
Donald Zitterick son of Mr and Mrs Jake Zitterick north of Graettinger fell ill Wednesday night last week and died Friday at Coleman hospital Estherville from meningitis He was in first grade at Graettinger schools The funeral was held Sunday Divorces were conducted in the M E church Sympathy is felt for the bereaved parents
Mrs. Chris Torgecaon of Ottosen died Friday morning at her Ottosen home after a four year illness. She was 60. Survived by her husband and three daughters.
Richard Eaton son of Mr and Mrs Wayne Eaton Ruthven received a ten dollar S H G merchandise certificate for proficiency in the Farm Accounting contest held by the national committee on boys and girls 4 H club work. He ranked among the top seven in the state. County Agent Randall Hoffmann and C EB Smithson). IH representative presented the certificate good for ten dollars at IH company outlets.
A brick and concrete garage and a business block for the Spencer Sipzer Sewing Machine Co. are under construction in Spencer. Costing 8 000 to 10 000 dollars, the garage on the old Searall hotel site measures 40 by 120 feet and will serve as a repair shop. Sr E Carlson builds a 25 by 70 foot cement sided brick front building with showroom, workroom and sales room, to be occupied by the Sewing Machine Co. after July 2.
