Navy finds no U S ships near Martinique volcano disaster

Washington May 12 navy department inquiry shows no United States naval vessels were near the Martinique volcanic disturbances. The Cincinnati was en route to San Domingo from Hampton Roads and the training ship Prairie had departed Barbadoes for Bahia, Brazil, leaving no ships in danger.

New Yorkers Lose Heavily in Trade With St Pierre Merchants

New York reports St Pierre Martinique, recently destroyed by a volcanic eruption, had a large trade with the city. Four or five major houses conducted a business of at least 500000 annually. One house had 100000 invested near St Pierre. flour and provisions exports on 30 days credit were substantial. Losses in flour trade alone are estimated at 735000, with the provision trade similar.
