Governor Deneen and Mayor Dunne via long distance call said Chicago is quiet and no militia is needed. Sheriff Barrett has 500 deputies aiding 2000 policemen on strike duty as wagons and deliveries increase citywide amid teamsters tensions and a potential tugmen sympathy strike on coal deliveries.
Rain brought a calmer day to Chicago labor strife as wagons moved with little interference. Black drivers faced refusals at N K Fairbank, while white drivers were sought. police and deputized store workers and express staff accompanied deliveries. Riots persisted in spots with little injuries and unknown shooters.
A dynamite claim at United States Express wagon near West Van Buren and Desplaines was denied by Special Agent Eddy who said no bomb was thrown. A blue powder filled bag caused minor staining on a driver. three men were arrested including an assault with a deadly weapon charge. Witnesses followed the suspect into a saloon before police arrest. The case proceeds under United States court injunction.
Chicago May 8 Governor Deneen and Mayor Dunne discussed the strike. Dunne reported conditions much quieter than earlier days and that there was no necessity for state troops at the present time.
Chicago May 8 1900 laborers at the Sears Roebuck plant on Redzie avenue and Taylor street have been dismissed. Four walkout leaders allegedly prompted others to quit over caisson workers pay 45 cents versus 40 cents as demanded. Unions oppose the strike and may demand the workers return or face trial.
Miss Fitzpatrick, Dr. Koch’s sweetheart and defense witness, testified about a birthday gift, a green perfumery box, and a Sunday drive during which Koch’s gun was carried. She described a scratch on his hand after the murder, noting his cravenette coat and brown derby hat as he visited that night.

Found unconscious before a mirror with a head wound, she died hours later without regaining consciousness. Letters mention an unfortunate love affair and her lack of desire to live without the man she loved.
Pat Crowe. alleged kidnapper of Eddie Cudahy and target of rewards totaling fifty thousand dollars, returns to Omaha after an absence of four years. He says he served in the Boer War with the Boers, then lived in Chicago a long period and has visited Omaha on three occasions in the past three years.
Grand jury in Pekin Illinois returns indictments against two high officials of the Standard Oil company. Requisition papers will be requested from Governor Deneen. Names suppressed. Officials allegedly induced Charles Kersher to claim ownership of a horse and wagon belonging to Standard Oil to force Fred Humsuit of Pekin to stop selling Royal Oil products, a rival brand.
In Sharon Pennsylvania on May 8, John Horoski shot and killed Mrs. John Leech and her teenage nephew Frank Rocci before turning the gun on himself. Police say the teen was likely unintentionally struck by a through bullet.
Japanese forces under Field Marshal Oyama press large scale operations along the Liao river in Manchuria, clashing with Russian troops as divisions of Mika Do's advance contact Linovitch’s left. Cavalry attacked a Cossack unit, driving Russians from a village, while a recon party suffered heavy losses west of the action.
Vladivostok fleet torpedo boats appeared west of Hokkaido and burned a small sailing vessel. The captain was captured. crew escaped except the captain. Russians may be returning to Vladivostok with larger ships likely nearby. No other ships confirmed burnt. rescue steamer withdrew into storm.
The Polish Socialist party urges workers to return to work in Warsaw. It says May Day unity in the city was impressive but that the moment for revolution has not arrived. It claims bloodshed came from despotism’s hirelings and calls for final struggle for freedom with renewed unity.
Moscow reports the second great zemstvo congress closing with a greeting from St. Petersburg praising equality as the future basis of organization after forty years of persecution. The note stresses steadfast support for reform and country welfare amid national misfortunes. Also mentions rumors of Kuropatkin’s return to St Petersburg and Zaroubaiem to succeed him due to Kuropatkin’s ill health. It also notes Foreign Minister Delcasse not planning to resign amid tensions with Premier Rouvier and confirms good relations between them.
