4-H D. C. Pakars sponsor an ice cream social on Emmetsburg lawn to promote June Dairy Month and raise funds for Palo Alto County youth to attend a citizenship short course in Washington. Free balloons, samples, and treats will draw residents. proceeds fund travel kits and travel to D C. Geelan and Molitor handle kit sales.
Michael Geelan son of Mr and Mrs Raymond Geelan of Ruthven graduated from the University of South Dakota at Vermillion May 28 earning a Bachelor of Science in mathematics with a minor in English and arts He now farms with his father in the Ruthven area Mrs Geelan was born Rosemary Egan of Emmetsburg. The report also lists a sequence of Ruthven baseball and girls softball results from late May and early June with scores and participating teams.

Ruthven Public Library starts its Funtime with Books reading program with 28 youngsters registering in the first week. Mr and Mrs Gordon L Wiegand of Topeka announce the engagement of their daughter Mary to Roger K Shirk son of Amy Shirk Ruthven and the late Herald Shirk. Mary is in the state auditor office and Shirk is an auditor in the Kansas Legislature division of post audit. The couple will wed August 24 in Topeka.

Julie Brown of Ruthven has been invited by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union to attend the Summer Coaching School at Templar Park Hotel Spirit Lake August 13 17. Miss Brown daughter of Avi and Mrs Robert Brown Ruthven will be a member of the West Squad in the August 15 scrimmage game with other West Squad guard court members Nancy Rasmussen Elk Horn Terri Brannen Farragut Joan Rostermundt Manilla Louise McDonald Tri-Center and Joyce Stevens Malvern.
The awards committee of the college honored Ruthven resident Ervin Miller for 400 years in trucking with a Pioneer Trucker Award during Farm-to-Market Truckers Day. The Centennial Year Scholarships totaled 5000 dollars, the largest yearly award since the program began in 1966, at a Hilton Marina Inn celebration featuring a neon luncheon, displays, fashion show, queens, banquet, cruise, and Rusty Draper.
