Exhausting Class One in Some Iowa Counties

Iowa war officials face about ten days to two weeks to determine how many men from each county will be called from the 3000 registrants. On June 24 the state seeks 871 men for special service. Quotas rely on class one counts, not population, causing shortages in counties like Monroe where only 14 percent were in class one versus a state average of 27 percent. Officials probe for favoritism amid occasional errors but doubt substantial bias.
