The Emmetsburg Board of Education approved a proposed 1962-63 budget with a $21 403 tax increase over last year. Public hearing set for 2 pm August 7 at Emmetsburg High School Building. Total expenditures listed at $572 862 with $483 408 to be raised by tax. Continued on page 4.
The Rev George Dunn assistant to the president of Morningside served as a speaker at the First Methodist Church for an 8:30 a.m. Sunday service on the theme Maintaining Your Values. He has pastored for 18 years at First Church in Sioux City and previously led Maple Grove in Ida Grove plus Dubuque and St Luke's.
A dog named Spotty stayed aboard a moving Milwaukee westbound freight on the Emmetsburg tracks. Mike Schultz and his companion jumped off but Spotty remained on the car as it vanished toward the west. Local boy Mike watched, hoping for a safe return of the terrier.
Official readings by U S Weather Observer Lewis Gunn show daily high and low temperatures for July including 83, 88, 85, and 78 degrees with precipitation noted. Airport data collected by George Bryant records noon wind speeds and directions across several days in July.
George Bryant of Bryant Flying Service sprayed Emmetsburg this morning with a mix of pesticides to kill mosquitoes and other bothersome insects. Bryant flew low east and west over town during the operation. Graveside rites will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Immerspurg Public Library has received another shipment of high fidelity record albums from the State Traveling Library. Mary Anderson, librarian, says the records will be available for checkout this Thursday afternoon. Albums may be checked out for one week only.
The 1961 Palo Alto county audit is completed and on file with the state auditor. Frances Hughes said the report lists financial conditions for county offices and their total and net operating costs, and notes clerical errors such as payments drawn from incorrect funds. Audit continued on Page 2.
The Emmetsburg Industrial Corporation announces an Industry contest open to all residents and former residents of Palo Alto county. A 1950s style prize, a television set, is the top award with full contest details to appear elsewhere. The group hopes former residents will return and settle here and pledges aid and cooperation.
Mrs. Richard Naig of Emmetsburg drove with her daughters Jana and Marilyn visiting her parents Estelle and councilman Hanson on Harrison Street. After lunch a stray chicken caused talk as the family headed home, a curious rural anecdote from the day.
The 1962 Palo Alto ASCS convention will convene at 10 am Saturday at the county ASCS office to select a county officer. D Brennan, ASC manager, said today. Present committee members include Jon Lynch Mallard chairman, All Broderson Laurencg chairman, Ed Herke Graettinger member, Joe Nybors Ruthven first alternate, and Gene Ford Emmetsburg.
Howard Richardson and Leroy Walk ey of Jensveld Motors Emmetsburg receive the first annual Golden Circle award from the Ford division of Ford Motor Co. The recognition honors outstanding managerial performance in parts and service. The pin features gold tape and a certificate of qualification with a diamond added each year.
Art Weiland and Glenn Hoobler fished Spirit Lake catching six walleyes two four pounders and others 13 to 19 inches. One pike bore Conservation Commission tag 806 matching Art’s Des Moines street address 806.
Eddie Tostenrud, 13, son of Mr and Mrs Russell Tostenrud, lost two fingers above the first knuckle with a possible third in a lawn mower accident at the Tostenrud home Tuesday morning. He underwent surgery at Palo Mass Memorial hospital about an hour and 45 minutes later.
