Plan Fine 4-H Program at Iowa Junior State Fair

State 4-H officials announced an eight day program for the Iowa Junior State Fair in Des Moines from August 25 to September 1. Nearly 16,000 4-H club youth from 99 counties will compete in livestock shows, home economics displays, demonstrations, and a health contest with total prizes totaling over 7 thousand dollars. The event aims to attract over 2,000 farm youngsters and is billed as the nation’s largest 4-H fair program of its kind.

Paving Highway 169 Urged From Algona to Humboldt

A four man Kossuth delegation met Governor Herring in Des Moines seeking federal funds to pave U S Highway 169 from Algona to the Humboldt county line and to Minnesota. The Algona Community Club backs the project as tying together Iowa’s largest county. Hope remains high for eventual completion of the north south paving.

Miss Helen Bradley niece of Chas Metz Ruthven was married Thurs week to HL Lew McE offriat ing. Attendants Mr and Mrs Herold Bradey Ft Dodge and Mr Imer Wil. Couple to reside in Ruthven where Mr Duiner runs the electric light plant. They plan a trip to Indiana and Chicago and visit the Century of Progress Exposition. We offer congratulations.

Eight-year-old Haddan Phela swims across West Okobiji Lake

An eight year old Spencer girl, Haddan Phela, swam from Spencer Beach to Sunset Beach on a recent Sunday, completing the crossing in about one hour with no fatigue. She learned to swim at age four and now stands as a local champion.

Schultz visit notes hail storm in Laurens area

Mr and Mrs Fred Schultz and daughter of Laurens visited Exumersburg Monday forenoon. Mr Schultz stopped at the Democrat office to settle his subscription and reported a bad hail storm Pri ce sight with heavy reinfall Saturday night.

New Law Shifts Electric Tax Burden to Producers

Emimetsburg residents will see monthly electric bills drop about three percent due to a federal clause shifting the three percent tax on electricity from consumers to producers. Iowa expects an annual saving of about 850,000, per Joseph Carmichael, Iowa utility information director, with municipally owned plants possibly exempt. The change affects private utilities serving Iowa towns, including divisions of Iowa Public Service Co, while municipally owned setups may escape the levy.

The abnormally dry hot weather hits gardens in Town making July planting more essential says J G Cunningham extension horticulturist at Iowa State. Beans may be planted first week of July with hopeful rainfall to frost. Carrots beets first week July can yield for winter storage. Late cabbage transplanted July to withstand fall, if tomatoes available will crop before frost. Turnip seed sown late July and radishes lettuce mid August for a fall crop.

Ayrshire Buys New Pump for Town Well

Ayrshire council ordered a new centrifugal pump with a 7 hp electric motor to replace the old unit. The replacement aims to ease operating costs and reduce burden on taxpayers, with installation planned for Saturday and Sunday. The unit is guaranteed to meet capacity at lower operating costs.

Weather Balloon Instrument Found Near Laurens

Laurens San area resident N Barer of Pome- Toy recovered a weather recording instrument released by the Weather Bureau in Omaha. Six instruments are sent aloft monthly on rubber balloons. This unit rose on the Tri day of June and was found June 15. It reported 52,000 feet with temperatures of 60 below zero at 40,000 feet and 50 below at 52,000 feet. The ground observation noted 95 above. A second instrument launched on the 8th showed 2) below at 0 feet.

A boy named Donald Kraus of West and Mrs. Chas was struck in the eye by an axe and rushed to a medical facility. Doctors say vision may be saved though injuries appear serious and warning signs of further damage exist.

New Pastor Named for Spencer Church

Rev. Porest L. Richesom of Chicago is chosen as pastor of the Christian church in Spencer, succeeding Rev. W. F. Jurst who was killed in a Des Moines automobile accident in May. Richesom completed medical training at the University of Chi.

Don Howard Taken To The State Prison

Dor Howard, a confessed forger who escaped from Clay county twice and was recaptured in Sioux City, was sent to the state penitentiary at Ft. Madison to begin a ten year term. He had been paroled by Judge George A. Heald after a prior sentence for obtaining money under false pretenses. he served the remainder of that sentence when he escaped again. A separate note reports a severe storm near Lettars with heavy rain, hail, and substantial property damage estimated around $20,000, following a similar hailstorm last July 14 causing far larger damage.

Graettinger Girl Injured in California Accident

Clara Paulsen of Los Angeles, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. P. J. Paulsen of Graettinger, was injured in an automobile collision in California but was able to leave the hospital shortly after the incident.

Hand Laceration During Gravel Unloading

Gleius Mosbach suffered a painful hand laceration Tuesday evening while unloading gravel. He fell and tried to break his fall with his hand, tearing a gash that required four stitches. His sister Edna applied bandages to stop the bleeding until he could be taken to a doctor. Dr. McCreery treated the injured hand after returning home from a northern trip.

Gangsters confront Swea City booze theft suspects

Four Milwaukee gangsters, linked to a 35 gallon alcohol theft in Swea City a week earlier, hunted for the thief last weekend. They allegedly followed a booze car with a machine gun aboard, threatening locals as the driver warned of reprisals. Young men questioned denied knowledge of the theft. Local residents remain unsure if locals or visitors took the liquor.

Wenig Takes New Post as Iowa Labor Commissioner

Frank E. Wenig, Clay county representative, leaves Spencer with his family for Des Moines to assume duties as state labor commissioner on July 1. He will be sworn in then for a two year term, succeeding A. L. Ulrich-Spencer Re- Porter, after appointment by Gov. Clyde Herring. They will reside at 69 Thirty-sixth Street in Des Moines.

Fairmont to see 3.2 per cent wines sold

Fairmont dealers expect sale of 3.2 per cent wine this week to bolster beer sales. City council was told by local merchants that permits are not required and restrictions may be bypassed, but officials urge restraint and may draft an ordinance like beer rules.

Arnolds Park Lad Killed in Ice Plant

Hubert Swarner 13 of Arnolds Park died at 7 am Thursday from injuries after a heavy ice chunk fell from an upper floor of his father's ice plant striking and crushing his head. He had been unconscious since the accident Tuesday. The tragedy occurred as he watched workers on the ground near a truck. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 pm in Arnolds Park. Surviving are his parents a brother Marino and three sisters.

Osceola Rep J Ditto Resigns To Join Highway Post

G J Ditto of Sibley resigns as Osceola county representative in the state legislature. Governor Clyde L Herring announces Ditto, a Democrat, will assume a seat on the state highway commission on July 1 after recent Senate confirmation. Ditto plans a state tour to study road issues following a short vacation.
