Anvets, American Legion, and VFW-WL approve joint rules for the West Main Street veterans clubhouse. A three-organization board will govern operations with equal representation, detailing investments, credit for equipment, and officer terms. Continued on page 6.
The outlook indicates temperatures averaging two to five degrees above normal around 73 degrees. Expect cooler Saturday and warmer Sunday with scattered thundershowers possible on Thursday and Tuesday. Rainfall 0.25 inch or less.
Friends and family of the McGoverns in Whittemore and Emmetsburg mourn the accidental death of Leonard Ellis, Crowley’s son-in-law and a World War II veteran, killed while demonstrating a fire extinguisher in Milwaukee. He leaves a widow Imelda and two children, Terry and Pat. News reached Mrs. Anna Midroney in Emmetsburg, with connections to John McGovern of Whittemore attending his funeral.
The Emmetsburg Izaak Walton League will host an educational booth at Soper park during the July 4 celebration. A fur exhibit and bird display, arranged with Conservation Officer Bernie Severson and the Tawa Conservation Commission, will be shown. Gene Yeutter leads the booth.
Friends and neighbors aided the Loren Malm family at the William Fite farm by removing wreckage after Saturday's storm. A long list of locals assisted with the cleanup while women served lunch. The Malm and Fife families expressed gratitude for the community effort.
The state weather outlook predicts temperatures two to five degrees above normal for the Fourth of July with warm, sunny conditions expected to hold through Friday. Only scattered showers were forecast for the weekend, but today should be mostly clear and dry.
The Leonard-fea-O' Brien post of the American Legion will hold its annual election of officers at the Legion clubrooms on Tuesday July 8 at 8 p.m. Commander Td Merk announced the call for all post members to attend.
Leonard Bredehoeft of near Emnetsburg injured a finger while operating a cream separator at his home Wednesday morning. He was taken to the local hospital where the finger was amputated and he was released Wednesday evening.
Emmetsburg farmer and fisherman Martin Jensen poses with a 20 pound buffalo he caught in Spirit Lake, believed to be the lake’s largest buffalo of the year. He used doughbait and also landed several carp around seven pounds each.
June delivered 6.88 inches of rain in Emmetsburg with distortions blamed on atmospheric conditions. The wet year kept fields waterlogged and corn growth stunted, while a cooler, unsettled spell framed the month. The Chicago weather outlook suggested a return to normal conditions after a soggy spell.
Clerk of Court Tid Thompson issued two marriage licenses Tuesday to two Spencer couples who plan to wed Ruthven sisters. Delbert Miller and Opal Capener obtained the first license. minutes later Kier Millar and Ruth Capener received the second.
Leo Jensveld was appointed secretary and treasurer of the Emmetsburg Production Credit association. Succerding Lloyd Satre resigned from his post.
A Wednesday noon collision on Highway 18 near the West City limits left three people injured. Mrs. Bob Campbell and two Davis brothers of Ruthven suffered minor injuries as their vehicles collided in front of the Hanitsboro Mattress works. The Campbell car veered onto the paving. the Davis car sustained front-end damage. The Campbell women, including Mrs. Campbell’s nieces Mary Lou and Betty Wells, are visiting relatives from San Francisco.
Emmetsburg post office will observe a holiday Friday July Fourth. No city or royal delivery services and all windows closed. Lobby open from dawn to 7 p.m. for box holders to pick up mail and post letters. incoming mail distributed at the front.
Mr and Mrs Harry Wilson of Oak Park Illinois were seriously injured in a head on crash near Rockford Illinois while en route to Emmetsburg and Lake Okoboji to spend the 4th. Their son and daughter in law Ruth Helgeson Wilson and two grandchildren were slightly hurt. Harry suffered a dislocated fractured hip and will remain hospitalized. Mrs Wilson escaped with minor injuries.
Thirteen motor vehicles have been licensed by County Treasurer George Doerr's office. Listings include Ford trucks and pickups from Davenport Leytor Co and Dinges Implement Co Emmetsburg, a Plymouth from P J Grethen Mallard, Chevrolets for Mrs A Hauck and Maurice W Fickbohm Redmen, a West Bend Buick, a Hiawatha scooter, and other cars and trucks attributed to various residents and firms in Emmetsburg, West Bend, and Mallard.
Recent admissions to En metsoure hospital include surgical cases Mrs. Leo Counley of Chicago and Marlys Swigert from Marathon. Tonsillectomies span Ayrshire Ayr and Ruthven Ruthven with several July entries. An accident patient Leonard Bredehoett from Emimetsburg July 2 and a medical admission Mrs. George Ridgy and baby from Laurens July 2.
The Bethany Lutheran Ladies Aid announces its annual chicken dinner for July Fourth. Rev. M. C. Thompson says the meal will be in the church parlors and on the church grounds. Lunch will be served at noon and a supper in the evening, with many planning to attend.
Emmetsburg prepares for a major Fourth of July celebration sponsored by the Chamber Committee. An estimated 10 000 to 12 000 expected, with crowds assembling at Super Park and Legion Park for parades, boat rides, softball, pony shows, water contests, concerts, a torchlight boat parade, fireworks, air show features from Sidon City and a potential Navy plane arrival from Minneapolis.
The weekend in the county saw a twister cause damage while the Quaker Oats Elevator at Crippen was wrecked. Three automobile accidents left one injured. Pat Carney of Emmetsburg won first prize in a state essay contest sponsored by the VFW Auxiliary. Lloyd Creery’s hatchery is involved as well as a highway incident injuring W Sharp. Emmetsburg defeated Graettinger 9 to 1 in Palo Alto league baseball.
