The Democrat notes continued paper shortages causing four page editions this week. An Omaha shipment is expected daily but railroad delays keep it from arriving. Local businesses lack advertising due to blocked highways and regional letters have ceased arriving. The paper hopes shipment and business will improve next week.
Jerry Scheurman, manager of the Gamble store, attended the 11th annual sales meeting in Des Moines at Fort Des Moines hotel on February 13 and 14. Representatives from Gamble stores in the district discussed Objectives for 1936, merchandising, advertising, displays, and store plans. The Des Moines gathering is one of five Midwest meetings drawing agency stores, manufacturers, and officials, with a merchandise show featuring raw materials and product processes.
Six deaths reported in the past week as severe weather prevented travel to Emmetsburg for a funeral. Mars E. Bran, born April 28, 1853, in Twinsis, married Jo ey Ham G. Grady at Ackley. The couple moved to Emmetsburg in 1917 and lived there thereafter. Mrs. Grady, active in church and community, passed four weeks after a fall injured her hip. She was a faithful Catholic and a charitable pillar, greatly missed by the community. sympathy extended to her five children.
Andrew Christensen a longtime deputy fish and game warden in Palo Alto County dies at his Ruthven home on Thursday February 13 at age 99. Born October 14 1853 in Bognes Denmark he emigrated at age 18 and spent 30 years in Ruthven area serving as deputy warden and holding city offices. He is survived by a daughter Mrs Percy Warnke and three stepsons plus 39 grandchildren. Funeral services pending at Evergreen Cemetery Emmetsburg with condolences to the family.
A Ringsted area resident reports postponements of several farm auctions. The M. Brown line notes the February 20 sale is moved to March 5. Ole Solberg’s February 18 sale shifts to March 20. San Skartwed’s February 27 sale moves to March 19. A. F. Kuhn’s February 19 sale shifts to March 10. Prospective buyers are asked to note the new dates.

Bethany Lutheran Church under Pastor M. Thompson holds Sunday school and Bible classes at 9 a.m. Divine service at 11 a.m. Sermon titled Redeeming the Time. Anti-Saloon League program at Congregational church 7:30 p.m. Wednesday evening prayer and meditation hour. Studies Aid postponed one week. meets Thursday at 2:20 p.m. Hostesses listed. Junior choir and confirmation class meet Saturday afternoon. Closing message encourages reading and meditating on God’s Word.
George A. Ingle is pastor. Church school 9 45 a m. Morning worship 11 a m. Junior C E 3 p m. League of Youth 6 30 pm. It is hoped all services may be held in church next Sunday.
The M E Church led by Pastor Edward Pruitt hopes the new situation allows resuming regular services next Sunday. Everyone is urged to attend. Sunday school starts at 9 o'clock with preaching to follow at 10 o'clock after a two week suspension.

Quarantine affects Harris Dickey and George Koryleski homes in Emmetsburg for scarlet fever with mumps cases in the city. Funeral will be held today with interment in Evergreen cemetery. The Democrat offers sympathy to Mr and Mrs Abingon in their loss.
Mrs John O Connell aged 72 formerly of Emmetsburg died Tuesday afternoon at the John J Mahan home in Graettinger after several months illness. The body was taken to Emmetsburg for burial preparation and a funeral at Graettinger is planned with interment in St Johns cemetery Emmetsburg. Survived by her son James of Canada a brother J J Mahan of Graettinger and a sister Mrs S J Guerdet of Crookston Minnesota.
John Atkinson aged year and son of Dr and Mrs Ray Atkinson of this city died Tuesday morning at home following an mumps illness complicated by long standing kidney trouble. The death occurred as kidney complications worsened the condition.
An infant child of Mr and Mrs Ruben Haag of Vernon township was stillborn February 16 at their farm home. A short service was held Monday afternoon at the Poy funeral home Vernon township with interment in Evergreen Cemetery. Impassable roads prevented a physician from attending.
Dist of first jurors drawn for the March term of the district court lists trial jurors to appear March 17 at Emmetsburg courthouse. Grand jurors report March 10. The diocesan declamatory contest brings St Marys Academy Emmetsburg St Johns Ban croft and St Columbkilles Yaring to Emmetsburg February 25 at 2 20 p m in Knights of Columbus hall. Parents relatives and patrons are invited to attend. Contestants include St Marys Academy entrants Oratory Thomas Cahill humorous Madeline McCullum dramatic Norine Brown.
Bancroft Register reports Pat Grames, son of Mr and Mrs Paul Grames, suffered two frozen feet after his foot jammed in a hole in a deep snowdrift along the railway right of way three blocks south of Main Street. Playmates left him. Mrs John Lehy aided, shoe removed from the snow, and he was taken to Dr Fagan’s office for treatment.
Harvey A. Sprout former deputy sheriff of Palo Alto county under Sheriff Bert Montgomery married Alberta Barton of Three Forks Montana on September 7 1935 in Wyoming. The couple reside in Los Angeles California where Sprout works for a motion picture company. Mrs Sprout formerly served as secretary to a state representative from Helena Montana.
Two marriage licenses issued on February 17 and 18 in Iowa towns. Matt Marsh and Alberta Keming of West Bend received theirs on February 18. George W. Johnson and Begtrica Woble of Graettinger were granted licenses on February 17.

Five new temporary recruiting offices for the regular Army opened in Iowa on Monday February 10 announced Colonel Apllon H Taubbe recruiting officer for Iowa. Stations are Ottumwa Burlington Mason City in the Post Office building and Fort Dodge Atlantic in the courthouse. Enlistments are for the 14th Cavalry and 80th Field Artillery at Fort Des Moines Town.
In February a blizzard siege strands trains and mail in Fenton. Volunteers shovel a stuck freight toward Lone Rock, returning exhausted after days of snow, while coal runs thin and three day mail supply is delivered. Postmaster Behrwatz and carrier Straley face route gaps as locals aid with improvised deliveries. A newborn Richard John Wallace is noted, and Dr. Mueller narrowly escapes injury during a country call.

Claude J. Brown is appointed general manager of the Rock Island Lines with headquarters in Kansas City Missouri. The appointment, announced today by FH L Reed, takes effect February 15. Ayrshire visitors George Nesshoefey and son Albert spent Sunday afternoon in Emmetsburg with Miss Carol McEwen and Miss Lolita Lilly visiting Storm Lake with Miss McEwen's parents. Lilburn Meek of LeMars called on friends en route to Ruthven to see his father Rex Meek. Mrs George Fiotch of Enmetsbury hosted visits with her parents the past week. Several locals attended bridge and social gatherings at the Waldron home, with five hundred played in lieu of bridge due to absences and prizes awarded to James Antoine and Peter Waldron Sr. multiple neighborhood visits, hospital updates, and notable travels to Iowa City, Emmetsburg, and Boone.
