St Ellen school Parents Club met at St Thomas parish hall for the third dinner of the school year. Room parents served roast beef to fifty five members while advisory parents attended. The program featured a Christopher produced movie You Can Change the World with guests including Jack Benny Rochester and other stars. Sister Mary Marcina was projectionist. Also noted is the retirement of teacher Maurice Happ after 23 years with Manly schools.

Two-Vehicle Collision on Broadway Injures? Damages
A two car crash at Broadway and Nineteenth street morning left damages totaling 275 dollars. Joseph J. Kelly of Emmetsburg drove a 1933 Buick northbound and Steven J. Hoben of Emmetsburg faced east in a 1980 Ford. Hoben’s car sustained 175 dollars in damages to the left front fender hood and bumper as it stood at a stop sign. The sheriff’s report notes Kelly was sunlit during the turn and sustained no injuries.

Silas U Watrous born Nov 3 1900 in Ruthven died Feb 7 in Oakland California after a heart condition. Funeral services were held at Lightle Hayes Ruthven with military graveside rites by American Legion Ed Nelson. He leaves three sisters two brothers and several nieces and nephews.

Ruthven firemen responded to a Sunday blaze one mile south of Ruthven that started in a hay stack and spread under high winds. The fire endangered an adjacent barn, its doors damaged, as crews worked to prevent remaining hay from reigniting.

Lifesaving Honor Goes To Pocahontas REC Man
John Marron 33 of Pocahontas Rural Electric Cooperative received a Red Cross certificate of merit for saving William Johnson 35 after Johnson suffered a nonbreathing incident and possible heart or electric shock at the Farm Bureau fertilizer plant on August 27, 1960. Marron administered mouth to mouth respiration until Johnson revived and then summoned rescue services.

Mrs. W J Guinn of Clear Lake visited her sister Mrs Bella Lowe on Saturday. A Father Son banquet was held Thursday at Trinity Lutheran church. Richard Lever returned from a 10 day hospital stay in Sioux City and is improving. William Wagner remains a patient at Palo Alto Memorial. Jennie Compton a former Mallard resident died in Spencer and services were held in Curlew. The Hersoras and their Storm Lake family were weekend guests. The Eastern Star held a lay meeting in Plover Wednesday.

D B D contract bridge club met at Alga Walrath’s, with prizes to Mrs Clift Hughes, Mrs Harold Brownlee and Mrs Marvel Hough. Dorothy Ruppert was a substitute. Dr Andrew Miller and son from Granville visited Mr and Mrs A Wagner. Mr and Mrs Jerry Capesius and son visited Spencer relatives. Mrs Robert Cjeka of Laurens visited her mother Mrs J P Sundermeyer. Hazel Wilhite of Lam Derton Minn was a weekend guest of Mr and Mrs Alfred Hiersom. The night school concluded its season with the last meeting at the public school Monday evening.
