At the Emmetsburg Partners Co-Operative Creamery Company annual meeting a committee was named to study by laws and articles of incorporation with a view to shifting stock ownership toward farmer producers. Directors and the manager support moving ownership to those with direct creamery interest, reducing ownership by nonproducers.
The General Motors strike continues to affect much of American industry. Governor Murphy of Michigan is seeking common ground for talks between GM executives and the strikers led by John L. Lewis. No solution yet, but hopeful for a fair settlement amid what may be the era’s largest industrial dispute.
Speaker LaMar Foster of West Branch, a Democrat, plans to introduce a resolution in Des Moines calling for a constitutional amendment to create a one house Iowa legislature. It would assign each of Iowa’s ninety nine counties a single representative, elected nonpartisan, meeting a year after the election. Nebraska already operates a one house system.
Gov Nels Kraschel suggests Iowa chief executive term be four years and county affairs be kept out of politics. The Democrat leans toward the four year idea but questions how county politics can be kept out. Rock Island lines report 1936 gross revenue of 78066706, up 16 percent from 1935.
The University of Iowa named Ira Tubbs as head football coach on a one year contract. Tubbs, previously at Miami University in Florida, is known more for high school work and has patented football accessories. Alumni hope he can win, but the short contract keeps Iowa’s options open and costs lower than star coaches.
Under the caption Other Editors tax we print the general rules of a tax revision bill sponsored by the Iowa Council for Better Education, introduced in the Iowa legislature. The measure aims to shift education funding away from property taxes, with a general understanding that the legislature is sympathetic and changes may be needed. Frank Miles serves as president and Rosa E. Cunningham as secretary of the council praised for its advocacy.
Commerce department report shows December 1936 dollar volume up about 11 percent from December 1935 in 437 independent stores across 20 business lines. Davenport up 269, Des Moines up 25, towns under 2500 up 89, cities over 2500 up 17,144. Emmetsburg merchants hoped to see similar gains.
A proposed tax revision would cut property taxes for public schools by steering $12,000,000 yearly from the state general fund to districts. Forty percent would go to all districts based on attendance. sixty percent would fund equalization for districts with low property values. Representatives Brown, Bowers, Freimter, Elliott, Latthaw and Gallagher introduced the measure to boost statewide educational equity.
Mrs Herman Blass and others attended an international tea at the Austhodist church in West Bend. Estherville visitors included Myr pid Mrs T J Hamilton and son Thomas. Families from Cylinder attended a play at Redman and a birthday party for Jacqueline Watling. Multiple calls, visits, and travels among Cylinder residents and nearby towns are reported, with social events, church activities, and a funeral.
Palo Alto County Board of Supervisors invites sealed bids for steward of the farm to be received at the County Auditor's Office in Emmetsburg Iowa until 18 o clock noon Monday February 15 1937. St Pauls Ev Lutheran Church invites parishioners to a 2 15 p m Sunday service with a 1 30 p m Sunday school. A 6 00 p m Thursday Lenten service, topic Christ's own testimony, will feature a local pastor. Confirmation classes Tuesday and Saturday, Sunday school teachers Friday, Ladies Aid next Wednesday.
Pastor C. Thompson leads Sunday school and Bible classes at 10:00 with divine worship at 11:00. The Written Name is the sermon theme. Candle lighting installation postponed from last Sunday, to be held at 7:80 p.m. Mid week Lenten worship continues each Wednesday evening during Lent.
The church hosts an 8:00 meditation and prayer session for one hour. Ladies' Aid meets Thursday at 2:30 in the church parlors with several hostesses listed. Adult instruction class gathers at the parsonage next Monday at 8:00. Lutheran Children of the Reformation meet Saturday at 2:30. John Howard Thompson is the host. Confirmation class meets Saturday at 2:00. Observances invite a Lenten season of prayer and reflection.
Rodman Presbyterian Church led by Rev I Nocding holds service at 1 30 Sunday school at 2 30 on February 14. Full Gospel Church under Rev Nelson Kloatwyk offers Sunday school at 4 00 pm church at 11 00 am evangelistic services at 8 00 pm and prayer meetings Wednesdays and Saturdays at 7 45 pm.
