The week ending with a deadly cold spell and fierce blizzard left railroads blockaded and mail undelivered. Temperatures plunged to 32 below and then 22 below as winds roared. Snow plows broke down, lines of traffic halted, and towns from Mason City to Garner faced heavy drifts and delayed service. Railroad and rural deliveries were disrupted for days, with trains resuming late Tuesday.

Prizes Given for Juniors at Winter Short Course
Four hundred junior club members attended the final evening mass meeting at the Amey winter short course with forty counties represented. Prizes included 15 girls rewarded by the Waterloo and Cedar Falls Union Mill for a bread baking contest. Ruth McGill from Council Bluffs won first in another contest among 26 girls, with Josephine Hollenbeck Eldon second, Eloise Parsons Clarinda third, and Marie Forsythe Griswold fourth. The event also honored garment making winners, with county and school prizes, and several individuals received cups and cash prizes for judging and crafts. Governor Harding sent a message to President Wilson expressing Iowa’s united support for national defense.

Mrs A S Johnson Is Dead
Mrs A S Johnson mother of Mrs QO J Sampson of Emmetsburg died last Monday afternoon at her home nine miles north of Ruthven. She and her husband were early settlers in the county, arriving in Ruthven 32 years ago and later living north of town. Survived by husband five sons and four daughters many residents in Ruthven Terril and vicinity. One daughter Mrs Martin Christianson in North Dakota and another Mrs Bert Linn in Humboldt. Sympathies extend from friends and neighbors.

Tieath of Jonas Mantz obituary from West Bend Journal
Jonas Mantz, aged over ninety five, died last Saturday from pneumonia after a short illness. He had enjoyed rugged health until the past year. He died at Belle Plaine and was interred at Webster on Monday afternoon. Ed and M. B. Mantz and sister Mrs. D. W. Lanning attended the funeral. A fuller Toledo obituary will appear in next week’s Journaal.

Mr and Mrs M M Sorenson of Detroit Michigan arrived in Emmetsburg to visit relatives. He once ran a creamery here and now manages a large central plant in Detroit producing about 14000 pounds of butter daily with around 27 men and 17 women employed. Detroit offers abundant day work at about 3.00 dollars per day and snowbound travel due to a blizzard affected several rail travelers and hotel traffic across Iowa cities, while Emmetsburg and Grundy Center report light snow compared to Iowa Falls Sioux Falls and Estherville areas.

Wilhite of Lucan Iowa visits his father N L Wilhite in Emmetsburg and notes deeper snow in southern Minnesota than northern Iowa. He traveled on the last St Louis and San Francisco southbound train before the midweek blizzard. Two brothers live near Lucan, all having lived in the county recently. In Omaha John McAllister of Spirit Lake, an ice cutter on Seymour Lake for Cudahy Packing, was killed when struck by an ice cleaner, head severed. He was unmarried. body to be taken to Lincoln for burial.

A brisk blizzard hobbled travel as Emmetsburg bachelors left Graettinger to reach Emmetsburg for the annual Bachelors club banquet. Despite snow and wind, about 100 locals gathered at K. G. hall for an evening of speaks, music, and a late supper, with patrons later dancing and retiring safely. The storm delayed trains and road travel between Graettinger and Emmetsburg.

Tombstone Sold for Gettysburg Banker’s Widow in Minneapolis
W J Tyson sold Mrs John Hughes a $500 monument for her late husband’s grave in Minneapolis cemeteries. The Hugheses rose from Emmetsburg to Gettysburg where he built a bank and real estate wealth before moving to Minneapolis to buy a $30,000 home. He died soon after. Mrs Hughes still owns the Gettysburg bank and considers moving back.

Look Out for Wan Who Catches Cold Warning
An epidemiology study at the University of Iowa hospital clinic traced seventy two infections of nose and throat. Of the thirty cases analyzed fifteen followed exposure to people with colds and twenty eight shared a common meeting place. University instructions urged staying home with fever or sore throat and seeing a physician, avoiding crowds, covering coughs or sneezes, and forbidding spitting in public buildings.
