Emmetsburg Post Office Names New Assistant Postmaster
Assistant Postmaster Mike Callaghan, a longtime Emmetsburg resident and 1934 St. Marys graduate, fills the vacancy after Jake Scott retirement. He began in 1941 and has served under Mrs Jessie Branagan and Vernon Simons. He married Shirley Henderson in 1944 and has two children Lorett and Mary. Bruce E. Wilson transfers from Council Bluffs terminal to Emmetsburg as clerk, wife Maxine Schumacher, with two days and two girls, to join when school term ends.

Principal Dick Martz announced the first semester honor roll at Emmetsburg High School listing fifty students with distinction. Three freshmen, one sophomore, and one junior made Highest Honors with straight A averages in four or more subjects. Twenty students earned High Honors with two A and two B grades or better, including freshmen Rita Kerlaske and Steve Mathis, sophomores Larry Dix and Dave Goddard, juniors Vicki Brownlee and Julie Brumin, and seniors Anne Beiter and Kathy Knud.

Balloon Seen In North Sky At Emmetsboro
Dozens watched a clear plastic balloon drift northeast over Emmetsboro on a sunny afternoon as a parachutist planned to jump Wednesday. Observers, some with binoculars, claimed sight of the jumper leaving the balloon while an oxygen issue kept the parachutist aboard until it vanished.

Russell Harris is named by the City Gas Board to succeed Dave Hindera as Superintendent of the gas utility. Harris previously led the Whittemore gas works and began his duties Tuesday. Hindera served nine years with the company and now works with Orville Wilson Plumbing and Heating.

Car Hits Ice Upsets Driver Near Emmetsburg
A 1964 Chevrolet driven by 18 year old Janes Eugene Janssen of rural Emmetsburg slid on ice about noon Friday, left the road into a ditch and overturned. Damage was about 400 dollars. no injuries were reported.

Supervisors Buy Trucks in Emmetsburg Deals
Palo Alto County Board of Supervisors opened four quotations for trucks and decided to buy two Fords from Jensvold Motor Co. Emmetsburg and one from Montag Brothers West Bend. Bids from Tosarud Motors and Benson Motors Emmetsburg were also considered. The board issued a beer permit for Lae West Bend Legion Club and a liquor permit for Harold Origer's Standard Service Mallard. Also approved the semiannual county treasurer John F. Phillips report and the monthly County Home custodian Ronald Milen report.
