Notes on Iowa agriculture and promotion spending
Kenneth Thatcher of the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation argues that agriculture dominates Iowa’s economy. He notes 80 percent of workers rely on farming, with $5.5 billion in farm output last year and over $2 billion in agricultural assets. He defends $135,080 for the agriculture marketing division and $131,500 for the Iowa Development Commission as modest promotional spending, equivalent to four minutes of Monday Night Football ad time, and suggests Iowa lags behind other states in promotional effort.
