Saturday morning John Casey of Ruthven died after a hand car incident near a freight engine. He attempted to swing off and the locomotive struck him, causing fatal injuries. Casey left a wife and several children and was respected for his duties and risk to protect others.
Ruthven representatives led by E P Barringer and others visited the agri cultural society to offer Ruthven to manage the Palo Alto fair next year. They promise free fair operation with annual state aid and expect support from Clay county for large premiums, urging Emmetsburg to take action and avoid further squabbling.
The Lyon county dispute centers on WOW acres valued around $200,000 in the western part of the county. The land, partly cultivated, remains largely unimproved due to titling doubts. In 1879 Frederick FB James of New York City mortgaged the property to his wife, then deeded to ALG. Wheeleration of his wife’s estate followed.

A pastor Swales tven records a strong resolution from the Esther ville Ruthven Lutheran Mission circuit condemning liquor freely as a national evil harming church and home. It calls pastors and congregations to curb drunkenness and to abolish drinking at weddings and other events, urging actions to eradicate the still existing drink custom.
