Appoints Raymond J. Martin Manager of State Liquor Store 48

Raymond J. Martin was named manager of State Liquor Store No. 48 in Emmetburg, succeeding retiring Martin J. Coury. C. O. Johnson of Des Moines, a State Liquor Control Commission representative, announced the appointment.

Hotel Venture Ends Local Daring Effort in Emmetsburg

Emmetsburg motel project begun in 1917, organized by local businessmen to build a first class hotel on the Kermore Hotel site. Early wartime delays followed by a 1925 stock drive raised 180000 with loan help, leading to completion and opening before dissolution and liquidation distributions.

Concert Artists to Be Heard Here Next Year

A Palo Alto County plan to launch a permanent community concert series for fall and winter 1949 50 organized by local residents. W H Jones named president with Mrs Fr X Cretzneyer as first vice president and Mrs Earl M Keehe as second vice president. Hasel Doerr serves as secretary with John B Kelly as treasurer. About 100 workers participate in a two week campaign to recruit members for the non profit association, which will select artists from a pool of groups and soloists supported by Columbia Artists Management of New York. Attendees included Jane, Mrs WR Schrogiler, Mrs Cretztaeyer, Mrs Beebe, Mrs Daniel Kelly, Mrs J Velite ter, Mrs F John Pyiman, and others.

War casualty rites set for Saturday in Manitowoc

Funeral arrangements for Robert Murray 32 of Milford Street Manitowoc are by Martin Funeral Home. The Milwaukee railroad body arrives Friday morning and will lie in state at the church from 9:30 a.m. until services at 10:30 a.m. The army honors will be given by war veterans with pallbearers named. Burial will be at St. John’s Cemetery. Murray served with the 34th Division in Italy and is survived by his mother Mrs Thomas Murray, a sister Viola and a brother Joan. He attended Manitowoc Catholic High School and was widely liked locally.

Irish to Open Home Game Season Sunday

Women Raise Over $2100 For New Club House

Emmetsburg Country Club women have raised 2108.41 dollars for equipping decorating and furnishing the new club house on Five Island Lake near the northwest city limits. Mrs Thomas M Kelly publicity chair announced Wednesday. Individual groups contributed 1970.41 dollars. 138 dollars from a rummage sale sponsored by all groups added to total. Construction is expected to be completed by the Christmas holidays. A bulldozer was used to tidy the grounds between the clubhouse and the lake.

Bridge Hearing Scheduled In Court House Tuesday

The Iowa Commerce Commission will hold a hearing Tuesday in the court house to decide if the Hook Island Railroad bridge over Five Taland lake interferes with boat traffic and recreational uses of the Ske. Charles F B Sayre, Des Moines, superintendent of surveys for the Iowa Conservation Commission, gathered evidence in Emmetsburg to push bridge replacement for higher clearances. The Lake Committee of the Chamber of Commerce led by Arthur W Sprith also seeks action. Earlier plans for a wider bridge surfaced but no recent word. Action may come due to the state dredge operation.

Applicants For Vacated County Post Welcomed

The Palo Alto County Board of Supervisors will consider applicants for County Treasurer at a courthouse meeting. County Auditor Matt Thompson published the notice inviting applications to be submitted by Monday morning. Applications on file Wednesday show many candidates. specifics remain confidential until examined by the board. The appointee will serve until the next general election in November 1959. Doerr is a Republican. the board currently has three Republicans and two Democrats.

Damaging Rock Rip Rap At Lake Snore Causes Action

Dr R W Heise warned Wednesday about teenagers removing rocks from the shoreline of Five Inland lake near Birgee harming erosion control. The lake froze and rocks were tossed into the water, risking skating and boating. The city and the Legion post will install signal warning lights at Super park and a custodian will patrol for night skating.

170 Voices In Chorus Sings Christmas Program at High School Auditorium

The Public High School ushers in Christmas with a large mixed chorus rehearsal schedule and a new Junior High Chorus. Nearly 170 singers, about half of the 176 students who tried out, will perform under Margaret Reever with two weekly rehearsals. The Christmas vesper concert includes solos, robes in progress, and a combined chorus featuring a Christmas story in song. The event is set for Sunday December 72 at 4 in the High School auditorium.

Acquittal Brings Free Return Home for Nels Christensen

After a Palo Alto county district court acquitted Nels Christensen of all charges, the freed man prepared to return home for Thanksgiving. Family members, including his son-in-law Louis and daughter Abbie, awaited news as Christensen thanked God and planned a quiet reunion at their farm near Graeth Weid. A cream colored coupe driven by attorney Prichard arrived to drive Christensen the fourteen miles to the Dulin home where relatives surfaced in curiosity.
