Curlew area sees drownings and local notices in 1912
News from Curlew and vicinity reports drownings of John Compton aged sixteen and Maynard Cottington aged seventeen in a dredge ditch west of Curlew and Edison Fulmer thirteen drowned in the Des Moines river near Algons. Other items note a jaw dislocation at Elite Cafe, property sales, business openings, and grain handling changes as local economy shifts.

Former Mallard Man Underwent Operations
J Kurtz of Mallard visited town Friday and reported that his cousin's husband Fred Deagon, a former local resident now a Great Northern Railroad conductor out of Grand Forks North Dakota, is very seriously ill after two operations in the past two to three months and will likely need another soon. Also notes local residents' visitations, lightning damage to William Sullivan's residence near Ruthven, and local market prices for hogs oats corn barley wheat rye butter eggs potatoes hens spring chickens ducks geese turkeys. A boy was born to Mr and Mrs Joe Hughes of Mallard Aug 17. Luke Ridenour bought the Frank Lodes Pool Hall for 3000 dollars and took possession Monday. Mrs A H Gaard of Cylinder will open a restaurant in the post office area.
