Spirit Leke Beschan an amateur boxer from Alyssic Indiana suffered a brain concussion during a scheduled bout at Arnold Park on the lakefront. He was taken to Estherville hospital in a semi conscious condition after a third round exchange with Bernard Schuck and later released, then readmitted with periods of unconsciousness before recovering with dizziness. Farmers report a smaller oat and barley crop than last year.

Gruver Man Found Beaten Along Hiway
Eugene Irwin of Gruver was found along the highway east of Spirit Lake badly beaten and taken to Spirit Lake hospital then home. The Beacon reports Irwin was involved in two fracas started at the New Orleans club and settled by a roadside fight where Irwin newsed. Government will buy butter again this year but will not peg prices.

Dairy Club Enrollment Up in Iowa 1939 Figures
4 H dairy club enrollments in 1939 rise to 1 683 members across 87 counties up from 1 456 in 1938. Holsteins lead in popularity with 731 exhibitors and 967 heifers, followed by Guernseys 479 members 627 heifers Jerseys 227 members 335 heifers Brown Swiss 189 members 2 5 milking, Ayrshire 23 members 46 heifers and milking shorthorn 50 members 32 heifers. Black Hawk County hosts the largest club with 81 members and 100 heifers. County tallies show Bremer Fay ette Delaware Jones Story Polk Webster Kossuth among others with varying herd totals and breeds. 4-H dairy clubs exist 23 years in Iowa, contributing to many lasting cattle herds.

Margie Burns Fort Dodge Alys Thorsen and Marie Thorsen Graetlinger arrived home Tuesday after six weeks visiting western states. They toured Colorado Springs Carlsbad Caverns Boulder Dam Old Mexico San Francisco Exposition Yosemite Redwood Forest Grand Coulee Dam Columbia Drive Yellowstone Black Hills Bad Lands and reported a wonderful trip covering about 9000 miles.
