Court rules railroads only may issue preferred stock

Des Moines judge rules that Liberty Oil cannot increase capital by issuing 7 percent preferred stock. He says Iowa statutes do not grant ordinary corporations the right to issue preferred stock and that only railroad companies may have such power, unless the articles of incorporation expressly authorize it. The decision impacts Iowa corporations with issued preferred stock.

A morning blaze in Estherville destroyed half a block near the courthouse. The fire started in a nearby livery barn and overwhelmed the fire company, gutting a three story brick building housing Christentén's department store. Total losses listed at 142000 dollars.

A newlywed man from near Humboldt shoots pigeons from an open upstairs window. The discharged gun strikes Mrs. Lehman in the breast, causing her death shortly after. The incident occurred while Max Lehman was returning to his home after a failed hunt.

Sexton Young Man Killed in a Collision

The Whittemore Champion reports Leo Peterson a Sexton youth was killed in a collision near Oskalduga a few days ago. He was a freight brakeman on the M and St. L and had worked on the Milwaukee Road local division. He was twenty years old.

A council ordered sidewalk work prompts a hearing tomorrow evening with several grievances from local property owners. Meanwhile many county farmers plan new buildings this year.

Press reports indicate Attorney General Cosson backs converting Wall Lake bed into a convict farm. A seed corn offer from A T Horton of Emmerburg promises prizes for top 50 ears, with free ears for buyers of three or more bushels, plus local distribution through Zabrndt Joynt & Company Emmetaburg. Also notices announce candidacies for local offices and a will hearing set for May 2 1934 in Palo Alto County.

Election of Officers of the Woman's Civic Improvement Association

At the March 18 1914 annual meeting officers for 1913 14 were elected with Mrs John Scott as president and Mrs E B Soper as vice president Recording secretary Mrs J J Watson Financial secretary Mrs M C Grier and Mrs B J Higgins as treasurer. The executive board includes Mrs Horton and Mrs Wagner with terms expiring in 1914. The report notes social betterment beautifying and social service committees, fundraising events, Chautauqua support, lake work pledges, and a total of 47 members by year end.
