The War Office reports Buller relieves Ladysmith after four months siege. General Dundonald with Natal carbineers entered Ladysmith, with the country between lines now clear of the besiegers. The garrison, under half pound rations, will require nursing before resuming field duty.
A New Haven Railroad passenger train from Shellburn Falls Mass struck a washout two miles north of Hartford. Four people died, seven were injured, including engineer Steven Searles and baggagemaster Edward Barrows. Injured passengers were taken to Hartford Hospital. the wreck halted the train about 6:55 p.m. The train consisted of engine baggage and mail cars, a combination car, a passenger car, and a rear dining car.
Information from the state department reports Edward Turner, a Kansas native and American engineer, died after about ten months in a jail at Orizaba Mexico on a charge tied to a train wreck on the Inter Ocean Railroad. Ambassador Clayton aided Turner’s case, but prior delays in trial preceded his death amid Mexico’s legal complexities.

A keg of gunpowder stored in a granary dry room exploded at Gagravus Horn’s farm four miles east of Dunkerton on February 28. Lucy Entringer a 19 year old domestic in Hallevue was attacked after a tramp, who she had refused food to, hid in the yard and slashed about ten inches from her braid. The suspect is described as about 26, well dressed with sandy mustache.
