Taxation ruling on cattle stock in Iowa Supreme Court decision
The Iowa Supreme Court rules that cattle stock must be assessed for its fate value on January 1 by the owner, distinguishing stock holder from feeder. In James and Jewell v Sumac Township, Judge F C Platt held a man who bought 650 sheep in 1877 for feeding is assessed for the average owned in 1877 1597, not January 1 1898, since ownership duration determines assessment. The court affirms no merchant status under section 1318 of the code.
