The imperial mail steamer General, owned by the German East African Line, was detained at Aden by British troops for cargo search. The seizure follows the Bundesrath capture off Delagoa Bay, with the General's manifest showing no armament though she was forced to discharge cargo.
Reports from Canton say natives near Wang Chaun engaged French forces. Chinese reportedly routed the French, with thirty killed on the French side. other losses unclear. The battle dates are given as the 10th and 11th of the previous month. The Viceroy ordered gun boats and 1,000 soldiers to restore order. The Viceroy notified Tsang Hi Tet about delimitation issues. News arrived aboard the Queen Adelaide, reaching port January 4.
Franklin County grand jury has indicted Col John M Whallen and Charles Ryan on conspiracy charges alleging an attempted bribe of Senator Harrell in the governorship contest. A safety deposit box designated by Marrell held four $1,000 bills and five $100 bills, found sealed in a plain envelope. This supports Harrells account.
In New York a woman claiming to be John D. Gaynor's wife appeared in court over fraud charges against him. She obtained a warrant and had Gaynor arraigned in police court on nonsupport, signing as Vergie Gaynor. She says they were married thirteen years ago with children, while Gaynor denies the marriage and her claim.

An earthquake struck thirteen villages in Aghabalak and surrounding areas causing widespread destruction. Reports indicate numerous homes collapsed and casualties were recovered, with relief efforts under way in Alto-Bethea.

In Racine Wisconsin the preliminary examination of Ienty F. Corbett charged with attempting to murder Rev. D B Cheney and his wife began January 4. Mrs Cheney identified Corbett as the assailant after detailing the morning shooting and struggle, saying I am positive that that man was the man who shot us.

Police under Public Works Commissioner McGann take control of the entire Northwestern Elevated Railway line in Chicago after a prolonged stand, halting construction and arresting the company crew. The move risks forfeiture of the railway’s franchise and bonds tied to completion by January 1.
Capt. Marshall died in Iowa City after a gunshot wound that was ruled an accident by physicians despite his assertion to the end that the shooting was unintentional. He served as commissary general of the Iowa National Guard and was a notable U S Army volunteer officer. His wife and daughter arrived to be with him as he faded. Gov Shaw will present four life convict cases for clemency to the General Assembly. The four are Thomas Kelley of Lucas County 1886 John Bellew Webster County 1894 Cornelius Moel chen of Wu tbuque County 1874 Jasper Mason Dallas County 1876. Many other petitions were filed, including the Rainsbarger brothers and John Wesley Elkins, but only the four named will be submitted.
A man jumped from the Chicago special of the Northwestern Railroad near Ames as it neared the west approach, suffering fatal injuries. He was unidentifiable, large in build, and dressed in a corduroy suit with a sweater and cap. The train’s conductor stopped, the man was brought to Ames for care, but died from a crushed skull and a broken arm. Authorities suspect suicide.
