An Italian suspect, about 26, tried to shoot the Shah of Persia as he left his apartments in Paris on August 3. Guards disarmed the would be assassin before he fired and he expressed remorse at the failed act. The police report a warning letter from Italy had announced the plan.
Rev. C. M. Sheldon, author of In His Steps, attended a farewell meeting in Livermool before sailing on the Teutonic. In Illinois near Marvey, three members of J. A. Norris’s family died and four others were seriously injured after eating toadstools mistaken for mushrooms. Alexander Jester, an octogenarian, was acquitted after four weeks of testimony in the Gilbert Gates murder case from twenty-nine years ago in Lonnoy Missouri. H A Bliss a 42 year old Frenchman from Windom Minn attacked Miss May Male 25 with an old hatchet at Lunt's Siding six miles south of Rock Rapids. He struck her multiple times after wresting her penknife and left her for dead. Blis surrendered in Rock Rapids and was jailed. Hartington not present.
Iowa state banks and savings banks excluding national banks report deposits rising from just over 43 million in 1896 to above 91 million by June 30, with year ago deposits around 77.4 million. Capital stock grew slightly, assets gained about 8.87 million, and total bank assets and liabilities reach 114.8 million.
A quarrel among laborers five miles southeast of Marshalltown led to a gunfight between Joe Seino and Joe Rio after drinking beer. Seino fired three times at Rio. a stray shot from Rio wounded a bystander named Corado, who lost an eye and suffered a head wound. Both shooters fled but were captured later. Corado is expected to die.
A major blaze at the corner of Maple and Railroad in Cherokee at 4 39 p m July 80 destroyed 25000 dollars of property including two livery barns a lunch counter paint shop grocery meat market billiard hall cigar store barber shop and the Lewis Hotel. Fire companies from Aurelia LeMars and Sioux City were alerted but the call was canceled. One lumberman W A Lysaght sustained severe facial burns and several firefighters suffered minor injuries. Also reported is the death of a boy near Washington two miles west of town and an escape from Union county jail in Creston. A Davenport packing plant sale is announced after a stockholders meeting.
A traveling salesman named A. Wells, recently from Council Bluffs, has disappeared since July after leaving Cedar Rapids for Muscatine to start work with a Chicago firm. His letters and belongings are left behind in Muscatine, with no further word on his whereabouts.
