An army of men clears debris and rebuilds the hall for the Democratic national convention. Prominent business leaders form committees to raise funds for a larger structure, pledging to restore the site in time for the event in Washington.
A Fort Worth and Denver City wreck south of Magenta Texas left two men dead and several injured. Dead are John F Pane mail clerk Denver and John Kuntz passenger unnamed. Injured include A M Scroggin James French Frank Lane and others. The train, with coaches mail baggage and a Pullman sleeper, derailed at full speed after striking a track defect from a washout. Fire swept the debris and many burned. The railroad faces heavy losses as the entire train burned.
A duel between Michael Ephrusi and the Count of Lubersac occurred on Grand Jotte Island in the Seine near Nenilly. Ephrusi was struck in the breast at the fourth clash, the Count moderately cut in the neck. Seconds were M. Tavernies and Tiestguna. Lubersac sought help from two noncommissioned officers due to arbitration delays.

He denies the claim of wholesomeness cited for the ban and demands solid evidence before enforcement. Porto Rican municipal council telegrams Gov. Gen. Davis to request McKinley clemency for five murderers sentenced by the Porto Rican supreme court to garroting. Three of the five are Republicans, but the executioner refuses to act. A former U S soldier offered to be executioner if his own sentence is reduced. The garroting occurred years ago. Public reaction favors the Porto Rican bill's passage in the Senate and relief from distress.
More than two million pounds of bacon in cans and crates left Chicago on the sixth for the Philippines. Two special trains of twenty refrigerator cars carried over a million pounds each, bought from Chicago packers for over $100,000. The bacon will load aboard the Sheridan and sail for Manila on April 16, marking one of the war department’s largest bacon shipments to the U S army since the Philippines occupation.
