One Tragedy of the Sea in a Mid Ocean Fire
In December 1892 the steamship Egyptian Prince sighted a burning oil ship in mid ocean and raced to help. Despite volunteers and a plan to launch a rescue boat, flames, high seas, and a capsize doomed a man and a woman clinging to the jibboom as the vessel burned. The Egyptian Prince could not save them and sailed away as the burning ship disappeared. None of its crew survived.

Week's Winnowings of News and Nonsense from Kittery to Carinou
A sweeping column reviews varied items including patents granted to E Adama Kennebunk for a shoe farm and to B Lawson Brewer for a rock drill. It notes the death of Henry D. Pike at fifty two from appendicitis and fires destroying Edwin Smiths Belfast farm buildings estimated at two thousand dollars with no insurance. It mentions electric Fond plans at Eastport, transport routes around Belfast, and the Erakine hall fire at Hallowell with a fifteen year old building cost of fourteen thousand dollars and capacity for thirty girls. It covers Robbins machine shop Gardiner losses over fifteen thousand dollars, a possibly wrecked fishing schooner in Penobscot Bay, a new observatory at the University of Maine with an eight inch telescope, a vault explosion at South Berwick banks with no plunder, the City of Auckland steamer launch in August, and a long passage of market commentary and anecdotes from letters and society notes.
