Destruction of St Pierre Recalled by Julius Tucker

Julius G. Tucker, former United States consul to Martinique, recalls St Pierre before its destruction. He describes Morne Rouge as a summer retreat, the city’s quirky streets, the open sewers, and a small tramline with two women conductors. Tucker notes the mixed race inhabitants, Catholic faith, and the city’s faded prosperity prior to the eruption.
