Hancock Sullivan Bridge and early Sullivan settlers
The relic text recalls Ambrose Stimpson’s view of 150 years of progress from settlement patterns in Sullivan, Maine. It details York and Marblehead origins, family names like Sargent and Simpson, and the Long Cove dam era. It notes Sargent’s bridge built 1821–22 by John Sargent, its demise by worm damage and ice in 1828–29, toll life, and the shift from tide mills to fresh water privileges. It also mentions the East Franklin chapel dedication and local business shifts shaped by lumbering and river work.
